Joe Himelick

In our conversation today with Joe Himelick, the driving force behind Himelick Financial Group, it quickly becomes evident that he’s not your run-of-the-mill financial advisor. What distinguishes Joe is his deep investment in the lives and futures of his clients, fostering connections that extend far beyond the usual business relationships. We explored his journey into finance, his methods for dealing with the complexities of today’s financial world, and the unparalleled personal attention he devotes to each client. This genuine, grounded discussion offers insights into Joe’s character and his distinctive approach to wealth management, proving it’s about much more than just the numbers.

It seems like you’ve had a very diverse and fulfilling career in financial planning. Can you share an early life experience that sparked your interest in this field?

Reflecting on my journey, I believe it was the combination of my education and the values instilled in me as a child and young adult that set me on this path. The principles of integrity and service, coupled with a natural inclination towards assisting others in achieving their goals, naturally steered me towards a career where I could apply these values daily. Financial planning transcends mere numbers; it’s about making a positive difference in people’s lives, and that’s what initially drew me in.

Managing relationships with clients over the decades and across generations is no small feat. What drives your dedication to maintaining these long-term connections?

What truly drives me is the deep sense of responsibility I feel towards my clients. Knowing that they trust me to guide them through their financial journey, often during their most critical life moments, is both humbling and motivating. This responsibility extends beyond the present generation and into the planning for future generations. The opportunity to make a lasting impact on multiple generations of a family is a privilege that continually fuels my dedication.  The responsibility and opportunity to make a lasting impact on multiple generations of a family is a privilege that continually fuels my dedication.

You’ve achieved significant professional designations in your career. Beyond these accomplishments, how do you continue to grow and learn in your field?

The world of financial planning is ever-evolving, and staying at the forefront of industry trends and regulations is crucial. Beyond my formal designations of MSFS, ChFC, and CLU from the American College, I actively engage in continuous learning through advisory and fiduciary board participation and speaking engagements. These opportunities not only allow me to impart my knowledge but also to glean insights from the experiences of my peers. This ongoing exchange of ideas is essential for personal and professional growth.

Outside of work, you have a passion for golf, gardening, and hiking with your wife Pat. How do these activities influence your approach to financial planning?

My hobbies teach me lessons that apply to both life and financial planning. Golf has taught me about patience and strategic thinking; gardening, the importance of nurturing what you want to grow; and hiking, the value of perseverance and adaptability. These lessons parallel the approach I take in financial planning- strategic thinking, patience, and adaptability are all key to developing effective financial strategies that stand the test of time.

Looking back on your career, what advice would you give to someone just starting in the financial planning industry?

My advice would be to prioritize building genuine relationships with your clients. Understand their needs, fears, and dreams. Financial planning is much more than managing assets; it’s about guiding people through life’s financial journey with empathy and integrity. Also, never stop learning. The industry is perpetually evolving, and staying informed is indispensable for offering the best advice. Lastly, remember your purpose—assisting others in attaining financial security and peace of mind is one of the most rewarding aspects of this profession.

“Start with understanding that financial planning is a marathon, not a sprint. Focus on setting realistic goals, embrace patience, and remember, it’s about making informed decisions that reflect your values and aspirations. Each step you take today shapes your future”

Joe, could you tell us what inspired you to start your family wealth management business?

Our journey into family wealth management was born out of a desire to make a meaningful impact on people’s financial lives. Working with individuals, families, and businesses, we noted a gap in how financial services were delivered. There was a need for a more coordinated, comprehensive approach that not only focused on the numbers but also on the personal goals and dreams of our clients. That is what drove us to start our firm.

What sets your approach to wealth management apart from others?

We pride ourselves on a holistic approach. It’s not just about the investments or insurance in isolation: it’s about looking at the bigger picture. We want clients to consider, how do your estate and tax planning work together with your investments? Are we mitigating risks in a way that’s in line with your life goals? Our role resembles that of a “financial quarterback,” orchestrating all facets of our clients’ lives to ensure they harmonize seamlessly—this often entails discussions with a family’s accountant and/or estate attorney.

Can you elaborate on the key strategies you employ for risk mitigation?

Absolutely. Risk mitigation is pivotal, but it’s often overlooked until it’s too late. We look at various forms of risk- from market volatility to unexpected life events. Strategies like life insurance and long-term care planning are part of the mix, but it’s also about creating an investment strategy that aligns with our clients’ risk tolerance and life stages. It’s all about balance and coordinating how the roles of different buckets of money that will best serve the client.

In wealth management, how important is it to tailor your services to individual client needs?

It’s absolutely vital. Each client’s situation is unique, and so should be the strategy we develop for them. This personalization extends beyond financial strategies; it’s about building relationships, understanding their life stories, and what they hope to achieve. This depth of understanding allows us to truly tailor our advice and services.

Through your career, you have worked with many affluent individuals. What are some key lessons you’ve learned from them?

One of the most profound lessons is the importance of planning and discipline. Many successful individuals didn’t get there by accident; it was through careful planning and a disciplined approach to their finances. Another lesson is regarding wealth not solely as a means to an end but as a vehicle for crafting a lasting legacy and effectuating a difference in the lives of others.

Wealth management, at its optimum, is more than just numbers; it’s deeply personal and profoundly impactful. It’s about securing a future, realizing dreams, and leaving a legacy. Our mission is to guide our clients through the complex financial landscape, ensuring they make informed decisions that align with their values and goals.

Joe, as we dive into this conversation, our readers, primarily entrepreneurs building generational wealth, might not come from wealthy backgrounds. How do you think they should approach wealth management?

Well, I firmly believe that the earlier you start planning, the better off you are. It’s all about setting the foundation early on. Even if you’re not coming from a place of wealth, starting the planning process can significantly impact your future and that of the next generations. Essentially, the best way to avoid a mistake is to prevent it from happening in the first place.
