His journey started 18 years ago with a simple yet impactful realization about our day to day energy challenges. From founding eight businesses to transforming a power model with Hover Energy, his story is one of continuous innovation and steadfast faith. Can you share about your early life and what initially sparked your interest in renewable energy?
For me, this inspiration to pursue renewable energy solutions came about 18 years ago, and it started with something very simple: research & revelation. The more I researched the largest technologies being deployed AND the ones not being deployed, it hit me; “we are surrounded by sun, wind, water, and waste; we don’t have an energy problem; we have an energy conversion problem.” I set out on a mission to find, fund, and create a solution that would change people’s perspectives on the issue.
How did your experiences during your university years, both academically and in extracurricular activities, shape your future career path?
Not as much as I hoped it would, actually! Ha! But I will say that I absolutely cherished my Graduate School experience, getting my Master’s in Business, and the principles I learned then, which I still use today. Excellent, sound financial systems are essential to ensuring sustainability for any solution.
How have your faith or personal beliefs influenced your professional journey and leadership style?
Powerfully, yes. I’ve started 8 businesses, with varying degrees of success, but the one characteristic that is timeless, and that has proven essential to success throughout is: faith. There are days, indeed sometimes weeks, when faith has both sustained me and simultaneously kept me kind and considerate, even in the face of incredible stress. That power is tangible and needed in order to lead well. Perhaps even more importantly, faith “is the assurance of things hoped for”, and throughout my career in entrepreneurship, it has inspired me to lead with hope at all times. We all want to strive for something good, do we not? I know I do every day….
What role has your family played in supporting your career, and how have you balanced your professional and personal life over the years?
My family is fun, crazy, loving, and remarkably supportive of all that I have done. Without them, frankly, I am quite sure I never would have made it this far. Their love and support drive me to the next great task day in and day out, and I thank God for them every day.
What motivated you to pursue further education and certifications throughout your career?
I’m enrolled in another right now! AI for Leaders at the University of Texas. I have always wanted to learn, and truly I don’t want to ever stop learning. Clearly, I’ve still got plenty to learn in life, and I look forward to the next area that captivates my brain and draws me in. I believe that the more we learn, the more we can help others. Isn’t that the goal in the first place??
Could you tell us about your hobbies and interests outside of work?
I love to run, I love to travel with my wife, I love to explore new restaurants (we might even be considered ‘foodies’, honestly). And I love to serve. If I can continue to serve others in our community every week, then I will be a happy man for a long time. More recently, I’ve grown to love to do marriage counseling, and Lord knows there is plenty of need for it. In general, I would say that encouraging others really is a favorite pastime for me!
What have been some of the most rewarding experiences in your career so far, and how do you measure success on a personal level?
Building Hover has been simply the most rewarding experience of my career, hands down. From the creation of the technology, to the amazing investors and the impressive people with whom I get to work every day, it is truly special what Hover can do now to help our customers. I absolutely love getting up in the morning!
What were some significant challenges you faced while restructuring Regenedyne LLC, and how did you overcome them?
Navigating many different opinions about the best way to restructure investment is a challenge in any circumstance. With Regenedyne, the investors were absolutely amazing, most of whom I still know to this day! But finding the best pathway forward coming from a very difficult situation was not easy at all. Yet somehow, with great people willing to be humble and collaborative, we found a way, and it’s been a blessing ever since.
How has your experience in investment banking and finance influenced your approach to managing and growing companies in the renewable energy sector?
Well, this is indeed still playing out, but as I said before, great financial principles are essential to any solution if you want it to be sustainable. They’re the foundation of a lasting business. Twenty years ago, the Renewable Energy Industry lacked great financial leadership. Today, it has it in abundance. I’m just honored to be part of that transformation in the industry, and the proof of its impact is in the growth you see today.
What are the biggest trends and opportunities in the renewable energy industry over the next decade?
Collaboration. Renewable energy has the unique characteristic of being intermittent. For decades, the world saw that as a problem; which it can be when you approach the problem with one solution. However, when you collaborate, blend products, leverage the strengths of each, adapt, and use the incredible software of today to optimize the interoperability of products and services, the results are pure magic! The issue is, quite clearly, pride. Everyone tends to think they have the best answer. We all need to be able to say to each other, “you know what, you’re right. Let’s got with your idea,” and then be happy about it. If we could just learn to be a bit more humble, honestly, we’ll all go a lot further! One of my favorite quotes: “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” Well, we’ve got a long way to go, so we MUST go together. Collaboration is the key to long-term success.
Can you discuss the impact of speaking at international conferences and how these experiences have shaped your perspective on global renewable energy initiatives?
I absolutely love the passion that I often encounter internationally. It inspires me every time I travel. And of course, our solution is often more impactful financially for the international community where pricing can be so much more volatile. This raises the stakes when speaking at international conferences and makes the discussions we have globally just that much more invigorating to me. Bringing a new technology to market is exciting in and of itself, but solving problems for geographies that have real crises, that is truly inspiring.
What advice would you give aspiring entrepreneurs looking to enter the renewable energy market?
If you truly believe, whatever you do, don’t quit! Just don’t ever give up. It’s worth every ounce of the effort you give.
How do you envision the future of Hover Energy, and what are your long-term goals for the company?
We want to flip the power model on this planet. We are going to turn the current grid system into a backup power system. We are going to turn the built environment into a power source, one site at a time. And I absolutely love the journey.
