Who are the top investors shaking up the market in October

Investment

Each month, we spotlight the most active investors in U.S.-based companies, examining their significant investments and activities within the startup ecosystem. October 2024 saw some of the most prominent venture capital firms actively shaping the market, with Andreessen Horowitz once again leading the charge.

Other firms such as Lightspeed Venture Partners and General Catalyst were also highly involved, each participating in at least 11 funding rounds for U.S. startups. Interestingly, despite their strong activity, none of these firms were involved in the largest funding round of the month—the massive raise by OpenAI. Nonetheless, these investors found plenty of other promising opportunities in the market.

Andreessen Horowitz, 14 Deals

Andreessen Horowitz had a particularly active October, participating in 14 funding rounds—its highest level of engagement this year. In the three months leading up to October, the firm had already completed 32 deals.

Among the highlights was Valon Technologies, a New York-based mortgage servicing platform, which secured $100 million in a Series C funding round led by WestCap. Additionally, Andreessen Horowitz led a $51.5 million Series C for Infinitus Systems, a San Francisco-based company specializing in AI-driven automation for healthcare phone calls.

General Catalyst, 12 Deals

General Catalyst also had a strong showing in October, closing 12 deals—matching its activity level from April. A key highlight was their leadership in two high-profile funding rounds. On October 25, they led a $900 million Series A for Pacific Fusion, a startup focused on nuclear fusion-based energy. Just days later, they co-led a $200 million Series D for Armis Security, a cybersecurity startup.

Lightspeed Venture Partners, 11 Deals

Lightspeed Venture Partners was similarly active, participating in 11 funding rounds in October, marking their busiest month this year. They were involved in the notable Pacific Fusion round as well. Additionally, they co-led a $135 million Series D for EvenUp, a legal tech startup using AI in the personal injury sector, and took part in the $75 million Series C for payment processing startup Finix.

Sequoia Capital and Alumni Ventures, 9 Deals Each

Sequoia Capital and Alumni Ventures each recorded nine deals, contributing to significant rounds but not setting new records for their activity levels. Alumni Ventures supported Impulse Space in a $150 million Series B, while Sequoia Capital participated in Maven Clinic’s $125 million Series F, which elevated the teletherapy startup’s valuation to $1.7 billion.

Additional Notable Deals

  • BoxGroup followed closely with eight deals.

  • Thrive Capital took the lead in dollar amounts, participating in two sizable rounds exceeding $6.6 billion, including OpenAI’s major funding raise.
