Cameo Employees Get a Ten Thousand Dollar Incentive to Work in Office

Employees incentives

In response to the growing trend of major corporations like Amazon and JPMorgan pushing for a return-to-office (RTO) policy, Cameo, the Chicago-based startup known for celebrity video messages, is taking an innovative approach to encourage employees to come back to the office. The company has announced a $10,000 annual raise for its 26 headquarters employees who comply with its new RTO policy, which requires them to work from the office Monday through Thursday.

A Work Environment Built Around Perks

This new strategy, revealed to employees last month, aims to create a positive work environment, offering perks rather than restrictions. In addition to the generous pay increase, Cameo is also offering free parking, daily catered lunches, and access to an onsite gym. CEO Steven Galanis emphasized the goal of transforming the office into a desirable space, stating, “We really felt like we wanted to make HQ a perk, not a punishment.”

Exemption for Remote Workers

Cameo has employees based across the U.S. and internationally in cities like New York and Los Angeles, but these employees will not be subject to the RTO policy and will not receive the pay raise. The decision to implement a $10,000 raise was designed to make a tangible impact on employees’ lives, with Galanis hoping it would help younger workers find housing closer to the office, thereby reducing long commutes.

Impact of the RTO Shift

Prior to this change, Cameo’s Chicago employees enjoyed a flexible work environment, averaging two to three office visits per week. After the announcement of the RTO policy, employees were given the option to relocate without the requirement to return to the office. Surprisingly, instead of seeing a mass departure, the move has sparked increased interest from remote workers looking to move to Chicago to take advantage of the new benefits.

Positive Return-to-Office Sentiment

Recent research, including a survey from HealthEquity, shows that many employees have positive experiences with the return to hybrid or in-person work. Seventy-five percent of employees who transitioned back to the office reported favorable outcomes, with enhanced collaboration being a significant factor for 74% of respondents. While the cost of commuting remains a hurdle, opportunities for professional development and team-building were cited as major motivators for returning.

Looking Ahead

Despite challenges, including a sharp decline in its valuation from $1 billion in 2021 to a lower figure by March 2024, Cameo remains hopeful about its future. CEO Galanis expressed his gratitude for the support from investors and his team, acknowledging that the company has yet to reach its full potential. With its initiatives, Cameo reflects the broader trend of balancing employee flexibility with the evolving goals of modern workplaces.
