How Wineries Are Winning Over Gen Z

Winemakers are currently navigating a challenging landscape, and it’s not due to overindulging in their own vintages. Rather, the dilemma stems from the unique preferences of Generation Z—those born from the mid-1990s to 2012. Unlike their predecessors, this demographic exhibits a noticeable shift in alcohol consumption habits. Gen Z, on the whole, is less inclined towards alcohol, with legal drinking age members consuming 20% less than Millennials at the same age. Astonishingly, about one-third abstain from alcohol entirely. Factors such as cost, ineffective marketing strategies targeting Gen Z, and health concerns have been identified by Fortune and McKinsey research as key contributors to this trend.

Despite these obstacles, some winemakers have ingeniously reversed the trend. Josh Sellers of Deutsche Family Wine & Spirits experienced an unexpected surge in brand visibility following a viral social media post that humorously branded their wine as upscale yet affordable. This viral moment led to increased sales, particularly among 20-somethings attracted by the blend of affordability and internet popularity. Riding the wave of this success, Josh Sellers enhanced their social media presence, engaging with the newfound attention through humor and self-deprecation. This strategy not only boosted their Instagram following by nearly 80% but also earned them a comedic nod on “Saturday Night Live.”

In a different approach to captivate Gen Z, Whiny Baby, in collaboration with the McBride Sisters of Black Girl Magic fame, launched a wine brand with a bold name and an equally bold mission. Designed with Gen Z’s preferences in mind, Whiny Baby features wines with playful packaging, phone charm accessories, and innovative peel-and-stick labels for personal notes. The brand emphasizes connection, sustainability, and ease of use with screw caps instead of traditional corks.

These innovative strategies by winemakers, whether through leveraging viral social media trends or reimagining wine presentation, underscore the industry’s adaptability in the face of evolving consumer tastes. The effectiveness of these approaches in making wine appealing to Gen Z remains to be seen, but it’s clear that these winemakers are determined to explore every avenue to engage this new generation of potential wine enthusiasts.
