Amid rising inflation, many consumers are tightening their budgets, cutting back on non-essentials like coffee and fast food. Dining out now costs about 20% more than it did three years ago, according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. As reported by a Fox News affiliate, customers are indeed tightening their belts at mealtime.
However, while the restaurant industry broadly feels the pinch of inflation, a niche segment of upscale fast-casual restaurants is defying the trend. Eateries like Sweetgreen and Chipotle Mexican Grill have experienced significant growth. According to research firm GuestXM, this sector has seen the highest traffic growth compared to other restaurant categories.
Sweetgreen recently reported a 5% year-over-year growth in its stores, lifting its earnings outlook and boosting its stock. Chipotle also reported a strong performance, with same-store sales up an average of 7% year-over-year and nearly 50 new restaurants opened in the first quarter of this year. Chipotle attributed some of its success to popular new menu items like Chicken Al Pastor.
Why are these upscale fast-casual restaurants thriving amidst a general slowdown? Experts suggest several reasons. Firstly, they offer perceived value to their upscale customer base, who see fresh food offerings as a better deal compared to rising prices of traditional fast food like Big Macs and Whoppers, according to CNBC. Sweetgreen, in particular, benefits from its locations in high-income areas.
Additionally, both companies have focused on improving their throughput, meaning they can prepare and serve their dishes more quickly, which enhances customer satisfaction. Another factor contributing to their success is what some call the “Ozempic effect.” As weight loss drugs like Ozempic gain popularity, restaurants with vegetable-forward menus are attracting more health-conscious customers. A recent survey by investment firm William Blair found that individuals on weight loss medications reported frequenting Sweetgreen more often, while cutting back on visits to less healthy dining options by up to half.
In summary, the combination of offering nutritious meals at perceived value and enhancing service efficiency is proving to be a winning strategy, keeping upscale fast-casual restaurants in high demand.
