India has officially opened its newest consulate in downtown Seattle, marking a significant development for the region’s technology sector and immigrant community. The event drew notable figures including Washington Governor Bob Ferguson, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, Senator Maria Cantwell, and Vinay Kwatra, the Ambassador of India to the United States. The consulate occupies two floors in the historic Federal Reserve Building and began initial operations in late 2023.

Prakash Gupta, Consulate General for the new Seattle hub, emphasized the consulate’s role as a resource for tech companies, investors, and professionals with interests spanning Seattle and India. The Seattle metro area is home to one of the largest Asian Indian populations in the United States, and India remains the top country of birth for immigrants in King County. According to a 2018 Seattle Times report, over 40% of foreign-born IT workers in the region are from India. Microsoft’s latest diversity report also notes that the Asian community is the largest minority group within the company, with more than 65% identifying as South Asian.

- It has already provided services to more than 23,000 applicants across the Pacific Northwest, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nebraska.

In 2023, Amazon led the tech sector with 14,764 H-1B visa approvals, while Microsoft secured 4,725.
