What Drives Major Brands to Expand Their Gluten-Free Offerings?

Cookies

As more people embrace low-carb, keto, and paleo diets, the trend of avoiding gluten is becoming increasingly popular. Chances are, you know someone who is steering clear of gluten, the protein found in many wheat products. Now, even your favorite snack aisle is reflecting this shift. Chips Ahoy has announced its first certified gluten-free cookie, a product that took 40 recipes and 3,000 hours to perfect in taste and texture. This new addition will be a permanent part of the Chips Ahoy lineup, according to the company.

This move comes on the heels of the brand’s recent update to its original recipe, which improved the taste of the nation’s favorite chocolate chip cookie, according to company claims. However, Chips Ahoy is not the first to venture into gluten-free territory. Rival brand Oreo released a gluten-free version of its classic cookie a few years ago, which proved so popular that it led to the introduction of a mint-flavored gluten-free Oreo two years ago and a golden version earlier this year.

By adding gluten-free options to their permanent lineups, major snack brands are better positioned to cater to the growing number of people avoiding gluten. According to Medical News Today, about one in three people now avoid gluten for reasons ranging from weight loss to celiac disease. Meeting this demand makes strategic sense. As Fast Food Club puts it, “It’s a strategic move that not only broadens the brand’s market but also showcases their commitment to inclusivity and awareness of dietary needs.” In simpler terms, the companies capitalizing on this trend are proving to be quite smart cookies.
