Could AI Usher in an Era of Abundance and Solve Humanity’s Biggest Problems?

Philosopher Nick Bostrom, known for pushing the alarm button on the hazards of artificial intelligence (AI), is known for focusing on the existential risks that humanity faces, particularly with technology advancements. His prominent work, “Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies,” published in 2014, shed light on the unconventional notion that AI could fully evolve to the point where it disposes of human existence. This grim perspective about AI garnered attention, including from notable personalities such as Elon Musk, sparking concerns about AI standing as a threat to our species.

However, Bostrom’s latest take on AI holds a contrasting perspective. His new publication, “Deep Utopia: Life and Meaning in a Solved World,” shifts from the apocalyptic scenario to a techno-utopia where humankind successfully develops superintelligent machines without disastrous consequences. He examines the possibility of a world where all diseases have been eradicated and humans live perpetually in boundless wealth. Bostrom uses his book as a platform to pose questions about the meaning of life in an AI-driven utopia and the potential lack of human purpose in such a world.

According to Bostrom, though potential issues with AI development have gained significant attention, not much effort has been placed into exploring productive outcomes if we successfully evade these challenges. Over the past decade, perceived notions of AI have shifted, with leading frontier AI labs working on developing scalable alignment methods. Political leaders, too, have begun recognizing the importance of AI.

Postulating about the future, Bostrom envisions a world where automation takes over extensively. He believes this will give rise to discourses and advanced conversations on the societal impacts of AI. People may have disparate views as AI penetrates social companion applications, politics, marketing, and automated propaganda systems. If used responsibly, AI can potentially foster constructive democratic citizens and transform societal dynamics.

On the subject of an AI-solution-driven future, Bostrom maintains a positive outlook. He plays with the idea of a world where AI solves major global issues such as climate change, disease, and job scarcity, but this would require a substantial reevaluation of the value and purpose of human life.

The issue of ethical treatment towards AI entities also surfaces. Bostrom suggests that AI systems might earn a degree of moral status and could be seen as entities that are capable of reciprocal relationships with humans. This principle alludes to the idea that there could be wrong ways of treating AI systems.

In the face of the rapid advancement of AI, Bostrom expresses that it would be beneficial for those leading this technological push to take occasional pauses along the way. This could help ensure that AI’s development remains safe and beneficial for humanity.

Regarding AI as a significant existential risk, Bostrom feels that while the conversation is widespread and dispersed, the long-term consequences of AI deserve attention. He encourages companies to invest in AI safety and engage with policymakers, incrementally raising the bar as we advance.

Bostrom notes the existence of opposing views on how technology should be perceived and the potential dangers it presents. Some advocate that we should worry less about the perceived threats and push for accelerated technology advancements. Bostrom suggests, however, that the overarching message is that understanding the full capacity and implications of AI is complex and difficult to grasp.

Following 16 years at Oxford University’s Future of Humanity Institute, which he founded, Bostrom is embracing a liberating era of freedom. Though the institute recently announced its closure due to conflicts with the university’s bureaucracy, Bostrom remains optimistic about exploring and contemplating without the constraints of a defined agenda. As he delves into the complexities of AI, his work propels the conversation about AI’s impact on the future of humanity further.
