Key Values That Define Success in Today’s Startup Ecosystem

business people in a meeting

Entrepreneurs need to proceed cautiously when traversing the startup landscape because they could find themselves in rough situations that require decisive judgments about the well-being of the company. Entrepreneurs need to prioritize the elements that influence their success. This includes: (1) market research, (2) accurate financial projections, (3) new customers, (4) as well as the strengths and the weaknesses of the competition.

The entrepreneur needs to observe the behaviors of former customers, non-customers, and current customers. Former customers can describe why they no longer use the product. This will provide business owners with insights regarding the strengths and weaknesses of their product.

Current customers provide entrepreneurs with a clear view that addresses why they chose your product over the offerings of your competition. The last category provides information from non-customers. Market research must determine why the consumer did not purchase a certain product or why they decided to purchase the product offered by a competitor.

What Makes Financial Projections Attractive

Accurate financial projections provide owners with a wake-up call that focuses on the viability and profitability of their startup. A huge part of projections takes into consideration the budget that must be exact. This factor gives owners the information that they need when searching for investors and when creating an effective growth plan.

An excellent financial projection will pave the way for making informed decisions regarding the amount of money you need to conduct business. Accurate financial projections are essential for the entrepreneur who is looking for money from lenders and investors. Key components of your projections come from income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.

Your projections are critical. Here is one scenario – if you assume an average production price of $100 per unit, your numbers will be very different than if you assume a production cost of $150. Business owners can obtain the best numbers through in-depth research.

Seven Components of Great Financial Projections

Here are seven considerations when developing financial projections: (1) research your market size; (2) research industry pricing; (3) research gross margins in your industry; (4) research the cost of salaries that you must pay; (5) research the costs for site buildout and equipment; (6) research potential growth rates; (7) research marketing costs.

In addition to making your organization function properly, research will help owners establish credibility with lenders and investors. Show financial supporters that you understand key drivers and key performance indicators (KPIs). Organizations must prioritize needs and they must have the capacity to adapt to new situations.

Market research must lead an organization away from homogeny in the marketplace. Create a customer persona that aligns with the preferences of consumers. The light beer industry is an example of a product provider that experiences competitive homogeny. Bud Light transcends this situation by creating pop culture phenomena including Spuds Mackenzie. Budweiser addressed the crowded marketplace with the Budweiser Frogs and the ‘Whassup’ campaign.

Why Are Unique Selling Propositions Important?

Positive results hinge on the effectiveness of unique selling propositions (USP) that let financial backers know how your organization will attract a target audience and how your company will develop a strong brand identity in a competitive marketplace. An entrepreneur must position a product – this is comparative advertising and it keeps everyone on their toes.

Entrepreneurs need to demonstrate why their brands should be chosen over the competition. Owners need to compare products that allow consumers to make informed decisions about varied products. Raise awareness. Develop an USP and then position your product correctly.

The Battle for Your Tastebuds

A recent advertising campaign pitted SPAM against Johnsonville Bratwursts. Johnsonville went on the offensive by demonstrating that their product was visually related to SPAM. That is pretty much where the semi-overt comparison ended. Johnsonville did not name names.

Johnsonville delivered their USP by telling their target audience that their product contains 100% all natural pork. This differs from SPAM which contains ham and pork shoulder. Ham comes from the thigh and the backside of the pig. Johnsonville claims that they only use prime cuts. They do not explain what constitutes a prime cut.

SPAM acknowledges that they uses ham as a filler. Some consumers believe that fillers diminish the flavor of products. Other consumers claim that fillers can enhance the flavor of the product. Some consumers lack the knowledge to determine the difference between pork side and pork shoulder. Johnsonville places the word ‘natural’ on the packaging of some of their products. It is unclear what is ‘natural’ about their links, sausages, and bratwursts.

How Can a Startup Attract New Consumers?

Advertising relies on quantitative analysis to develop the right messages for the target audience. These statistics primarily originate from Internet traffic with a foundation in keywords. Business owners will make informed decisions by analyzing website traffic – entrepreneurs must employ techies with backgrounds in search engine optimization (SEO) to be successful.

Do not let marketing campaigns get you down. People with backgrounds in SEO and advertising can make your startup profitable. Marketing is simplified if you are the first person to bring a product to the marketplace. However, If you are second, third or fourth, your job will be more difficult. Hire SEO practitioners who can position your product competitively.

Consumer Knowledge and The Rungs of Ladders

Marketers demonstrate how to increase product reach by using techniques that analyze the sophistication of your audience. These knowledge levels are like rungs on a ladder. The more rungs on a ladder, the more competitive the environment. The beer industry exemplifies an extremely crowded and competitive marketplace.

Here are brief observations about the ladders in your mind – your placement on a rung in the ladder is influenced by your knowledge of the products that are vying tooth for tooth to gain your attention. Some industries are hypercompetitive. The fast food industry is an example.

Multiple products in the same industry can occupy the same rung on the ladder. This is called homogenous competition. Companies need to differentiate their product to move to a different rung within the ladder. To stand out from the crowd, entrepreneurs need to modify their USP.

The Positioning of Similar Products

Attempts to gain market share will create intense competition. This is particularly true when the differences between products remain marginal. The pizza industry is one example. The beer industry is another example. Bud Light and Natural Light are popular choices among light beer drinkers. How has each product carved out a market niche?

Both choices are light lagers with a low calorie and a low carb content. They also have a similar flavor. So how do beer drinkers choose between the products?  An effective USP will strengthen a brand. A good slogan can lead to success. Miller Lite profited from “Tastes Great, Less Filling.”

Regarding Natural Light, their positioning comes from a pricing strategy. This product costs significantly less than Bud Light. They position their product on the ladder to appeal to different consumers, namely college students and people who drink on a budget. Bud Light has focused on supporting social causes.

Entrepreneurs need to be aware of the positions on ladders, because they need comprehensive information about their marketing of the product. They also need to understand the campaigns run by competitors. This in turn gives entrepreneurs data regarding which strategies worked and which strategies failed.

Business owners conduct market research to determine the positioning of consumers on the rungs within the ladder. After marketers identify the wants and needs of customers, they will have the capability to carve out their share of the ever-changing marketplace.

Increasing Reach in the Crowded Marketplace

SEO specialists understand how a company can increase their reach by using different marketing techniques that include creating effective advertisements, budgeting for those advertisements, and refining their marketing approach to focus on the values and the consumption behaviors of the target audience.

An SEO specialist will be motivated to answer questions regarding why people prefer one product over another. Why do consumers choose lager beers over pilsners? This answer is apparent. A more difficult question is why people choose Bud Light over Michelob Ultra? Positioning and market research determine the answer.

Drinking Beer and Climbing Ladders

When Michelob Ultra entered the marketplace, the product added another rung on the ladder. Their product met the needs of athletes, health-conscious drinkers, and fitness enthusiasts. To promote their product, they selected influential spokespersons including Lance Armstrong and Serena Williams. They choose marketing ambassadors that provide great demographic reach.

This article described key concepts for most entrepreneurs – market research, accurate financial projections, new customers, and the strengths and weaknesses of the competition. Every team is only as strong as the talent that it attracts to join its startup. Hire employees with the ability to adapt to the introduction of competition in the marketplace.
