Do you go to work in a drab cubicle? Are you looking to boost morale amongst your coworkers? According to the Harvard Business Review, the relationships between recognition, morale, and productivity are intensely direct. I.e., the more recognition a worker will receive, the higher their morale will be (provided the recognition is for something positive). The stronger a worker’s morale is (within reason, of course), the greater their productivity is. The issue then becomes, how exactly can a business or organization boost morale without too much expenditure. This article will demonstrate the various ways in which a company can boost morale, at times through recognition, by both free and expensive means.
The Means
One of the best ways an office can improve morale is through community luncheons. Stimulating discussion, free food, and natural conversation, are wonderful means to create community and foster collaboration. Both community and collaboration are incredibly important for productivity.
A community luncheon can work in multiple ways. For one, if your company does not want to spend too much money, then a potluck should be recommended. A potluck is ideal because it prevents extra expenditure, and allows for co-workers’ creativity to shine (if desired). On the other hand, a community luncheon can work if the company pays for food. That way, the morale of a worker is higher since they are receiving free food. Plugging morale into any conversation surrounding an office environment is always beneficial for the office, or workspace.
Morale and Motivation
According to the HBR, morale is also highly related to motivation. Motivation is always beneficial in the workplace. Motivated workers take initiative, and do work outside of their own realm. Have your workers more interested in assisting each other by raising their morale, recognizing their achievements, and proceeding from there. I am sure you will find it is a positive feedback loop, as people earn their courage and confidence with time.
Internal Promotion

Another great way to stimulate and establish morale is by promoting internally. This element of trust which develops from hiring internally allows the company to grow with strength and comfort, as with each promotion, the company won’t possess any doubt as to the ability of its newly promoted co-worker. Alongside promoting confidence and trust within a company, promoting internally also encourages workers to work harder once they consider the possible rewards of doing so. A worker going for a promotion is far more likely to work hard than a worker not going for a promotion.
Wellness Practices
With regard to wellness, there are more ways to ensure that employees feel happy, healthy, and comfortable within their workplace. Wellness can come in all shapes and forms, from physical health to mental health. Thankfully, these two spheres of health commonly overlap.
One somewhat expensive way to improve the wellness of your workers is by including a gym or fitness center at the workplace. The gym can be simple, with some treadmills or some dumbbells to encourage some form of weight training. Even these small options, while expensive, can provide employees with an outlet for stress and movement. Being sat at a desk all day, while perhaps necessary, is not the most optimal setup for human health.
HR’s Homely Involvement In Health
All offices have an HR department, and the HR department can provide resources on the more mental/emotional side of the coin, which should enable open and honest conversations to flourish within the workplace. These conversations are productive for morale and stress management. If stress is managed effectively, then employees will naturally possess increased mental bandwidth to operate.
Perhaps offering some counseling services or some sort would provide workers with their desired options for relaxation. Ensuring that employees have a quiet state of mind or a clear state of mind should enable them to work more efficiently and effectively, making fewer mistakes. One of the best ways to ensure work productivity is by using detail; by that means, if employees have to backtrack less, they are able to complete more work.
Integrating Nature
Another proven way to improve the overall well-being and clarity of a person’s mind is by visiting green spaces. Making sure that an office is connected to the outside world demonstrates a level of tranquility and happiness within an office that is palpable. Adding a layer of nature into an office will ensure that your employees are feeling comforted. This isn’t too difficult to achieve either, considering how inexpensive plants are.
These are some of the wonderful ways in which an office can find more productivity and success by boosting and promoting overall health, wellness, and morale. While certain options are more expensive than others, they are all worthwhile, for both managers and their subordinates.
