Discover the New SBA Credit Lines for Small Businesses

Man and woman looking at cash

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is set to introduce new government-backed credit lines of up to $5 million for small businesses, as announced by SBA Administrator Isabel Casillas Guzman. The forthcoming working capital pilot program aims to be more attractive to both lenders and borrowers compared to the agency’s current offerings. Guzman emphasized the ongoing challenge small businesses face in securing working capital, especially for those aiming to land contracts for infrastructure projects or to expand manufacturing operations.

New Working Capital Pilot Program

This initiative is part of the SBA’s broader strategy to enhance its primary lending program for small businesses in the United States. The SBA’s 7(a) loan program, which guarantees loans to encourage lenders to extend credit to small business owners, backed over 57,000 loans worth $27.5 billion last year, marking a 7% increase from 2022. However, revolving lines of credit have seen less uptake than anticipated from both lenders and business owners.

Challenges with Existing Products

One of the current SBA products, the SBA Express loan, offers credit lines up to $500,000 but only with a 50% guaranty, which has been less appealing to lenders. Another option, CapLines, featured a complex fee structure that reduced its affordability. The new pilot program aims to simplify and increase access to working capital lines, making them more affordable and attractive compared to relying solely on credit cards or other sources of capital.

Details of the New Credit Lines

The new working capital lines will feature an annual fee and maximum interest rates based on the prime rate plus 3% to 6.5%, translating to roughly 12% to 15% in today’s terms. These lines allow small business owners to finance specific projects or borrow against assets. Loans over $150,000 will have a 75% SBA guaranty, and those under $150,000 will have an 85% guaranty, reducing the risk for lenders.

Accessibility and Implementation

In light of the current high-interest rate environment, the SBA aims to be a viable option for more businesses. Business owners interested in the program can visit the SBA’s website or its pre-screening lender platform once it goes live.
