As Millennials and Generation Z increasingly prioritize healthy habits and fitness, staying hydrated has become a key focus, driving growth in the sports drink sector. From vibrant colors and sugary fruit flavors to hydration boosters and micronutrients, sports drinks now come in a variety of forms. The market for these beverages is anticipated to grow by approximately 5% annually over the next six years, according to Kings Research.
To capture more of this expanding market, Coca-Cola’s Powerade is making strategic moves. The brand is launching a bold advertising campaign tied to the Summer Olympic Games in Paris, featuring Simone Biles and other Olympians. The campaign’s theme, “Take a Pause,” highlights athletes’ stories of taking breaks and coming back stronger. Additionally, Powerade is introducing a limited-edition summer flavor series, including Powerade Sour, a line of three tangy flavors available while supplies last.
Meanwhile, Gatorade, owned by PepsiCo, is adopting a more personalized approach with its new direct-to-consumer loyalty program. The Gatorade ID loyalty program, available through the Gatorade ID membership platform on the brand’s website, offers members emails about merchandise customization options, free shipping, and the ability to earn points on purchases made online or in-store on qualifying Gatorade products. Members can also earn points for referring friends and subscribing to email notifications. Gatorade ID members gain access to special collaborations, such as those with WNBA star Caitlin Clark and musician DJ Khaled.
While a loyalty program may not have the same immediate impact as an Olympics tie-in or limited-time product offer, research suggests that Gatorade’s strategy could be highly effective. Over 80% of people say loyalty rewards motivate them to buy from specific retailers or brands, and about half prefer to wait for their preferred brand rather than purchase a similar product from another brand, according to research by Direct Consumer, a trade publication. The loyalty program also enables Gatorade to communicate directly with customers and gather valuable data on purchasing behavior, both crucial benefits that align with the brand’s broader marketing goals.
