This week, Walmart announced significant changes in its business operations. Firstly, the retailer introduced a premium grocery line to challenge competitors like Trader Joe’s. However, the bigger news is the closure of all 51 of its healthcare clinics across six states and the shutdown of its virtual healthcare platform. This decision marks a sharp pivot for Walmart, which had been expanding into healthcare services in recent years.
The strategy behind the healthcare clinics was straightforward: place them next to or within Walmart stores in high-traffic areas, providing convenient access to primary and urgent care, x-rays, dental services, and lab work. This setup was particularly aimed at serving people in rural areas who might otherwise have limited access to quality healthcare.
Walmart had anticipated that the healthcare venture would be profitable, especially in areas with few medical providers. However, the reality proved challenging. The clinics were not as profitable as expected, struggling with staffing issues and facing high operating costs and complicated reimbursement processes.
The decision to close the clinics could disproportionately impact low-income and rural residents. In 2020, a Walmart Health and Wellness executive mentioned to CNN that many clinic visitors had not seen a primary care physician or a dentist in years. Despite plans announced just last month to expand to 70 locations by the end of 2024, these plans have now been abruptly halted.
Walmart is not the only retailer facing difficulties in the healthcare market. In March, Walgreens reported a $6 billion loss, primarily due to a decrease in the value of its Village MD primary care clinics. Initially, Walgreens planned to close 60 clinics to reduce costs but has now increased this number to 160. Despite these setbacks, Walgreens continues to maintain a stable pharmacy business.
Walmart will also continue to operate its approximately 4,600 pharmacies and over 3,000 optical centers nationwide. However, when it comes to healthcare clinics, both Walmart and Walgreens seem to be taking an extended break from this sector.
