W Health Ventures, a Boston and India-based venture capital firm, has announced the launch of its second fund with a target corpus of $70 million (approximately Rs 609 crore). The firm, established in 2019 by serial entrepreneur and philanthropist Sunil Wadhwani, focuses on early-stage startups in the healthcare and healthtech sectors across India and the United States.

Building Businesses Beyond Traditional Investing

With Fund II, W Health Ventures is deepening its commitment to creating businesses from the ground up, moving beyond conventional investment models. Dr. Pankaj Jethwani, managing partner at W Health Ventures, emphasized the enduring growth potential in healthcare, stating, “We’re in an evergreen sector that will continue to grow at a reasonable pace for the next 20 years.” He noted that healthcare innovation in India lags global benchmarks by 10–15 years, presenting a generational opportunity for entrepreneurs and investors alike.

Strategic Focus Areas and Investment Approach

The firm aims to achieve the first close of Fund II within the next few months and plans to support eight to ten early-stage startups over the next four years. W Health Ventures provides hands-on support in research and development, minimum viable product (MVP) creation, go-to-market strategies, and clinical partnerships. The investment thesis leverages India’s engineering and clinical talent to drive advancements in global healthcare delivery.

  • Oncology
  • Psychiatry
  • Geriatric care
  • Longevity
  • Preventive health

These segments are prioritized due to significant patient pain points and opportunities for impactful innovation.

Recent Investments and Portfolio Growth

Fund II has already made two investments. The first is Everhope Oncology, a platform co-incubated with Narayana Health, aimed at standardizing and improving cancer care delivery across India. The platform is developing solutions in chemotherapy, surgical oncology, diagnostics, and ongoing supportive care, with both partners investing around $10 million. The second investment is in a psychiatry-focused startup operating in stealth mode. This cross-border, US-India managed services platform supports psychiatry clinics in the United States with practice management, outcome tracking, and revenue optimization.

W Health Ventures’ maiden fund, launched in 2021, deployed about $43 million across 12 companies, including Wysa (mental health), BeatO (chronic disease management), Mylo (parenting), and Nivaan (elder care). Collectively, these portfolio companies have served more than 25 million patients worldwide.

Increased Commitment and Operational Involvement

While Fund I investments ranged from $1 million to $5 million, Fund II will focus on larger investments and deeper operational involvement. The firm is expanding its team by adding four new senior operating partners with expertise in offline care delivery, AI-enabled services, and US go-to-market strategies. Dr. Jethwani clarified the firm’s mission, stating, “We’re not a healthtech fund, we’re a healthcare fund. We are here to build companies that can truly change the standard of care for millions of patients.”

W Health Ventures’ latest fund signals a robust commitment to bridging healthcare innovation gaps and supporting transformative startups poised to redefine patient care standards across India and the United States.
