In a significant shift in the professional golf landscape, Tiger Woods, one of the sport’s most iconic figures, has ended his long-standing sponsorship agreement with Nike, a brand he had been associated with since turning professional in 1996. This move marks a new chapter for Woods and the sportswear giant, which decided to exit the golf equipment business in 2016, though it continued to sponsor Woods for apparel. Woods, however, had already branched out for his equipment needs, signing with TaylorMade.
Despite Nike’s step back from golf hardware, it has not retreated from endorsing professional golfers, with stars like Rory McIlroy still under its wing. However, the partnership between Nike and Woods concluded earlier this year, amidst speculation that TaylorMade, Woods’ club sponsor, was poised to take over as his apparel sponsor as well. This speculation has since been confirmed, with TaylorMade launching its own apparel line, Sunday Red, inspired by Woods. The new brand aims to blend golf and lifestyle apparel, offering everything from golf polos to cashmere sweaters and shoes, marking a direct challenge to Nike’s dominance in golf apparel.
The launch of Sunday Red, named after Woods’ signature final-day red shirt, is set for May 1st. TaylorMade’s CEO, David Abeles, highlighted the brand’s unique design approach, featuring a logo of a tiger with 15 stripes representing Woods’ major championship wins. This venture into the merging of fashion and sport reflects a broader trend among athletes to blend their on-field and off-field personas, offering them a chance to extend their brand beyond the sports arena.
Moreover, the move towards athletes seeking equity in their sponsor brands is becoming more common, with reports suggesting Woods may hold equity in Sunday Red, a departure from his arrangement with Nike. While Nike continues to navigate the evolving golf sponsorship landscape, securing a new deal with Italian golfer Guido Migliozzi, it remains committed to the sport and its athletes. Despite the end of its association with Woods, Nike is determined to maintain its presence in golf, ensuring its visibility on courses and greens worldwide.
