The conversation around consumer generations is quickly evolving. For a while, Generation Z, those born after the mid-1990s, has captured the attention of marketers worldwide. As this cohort begins wielding their own spending power, the race to understand and engage them has been fervent. However, a newer, younger generation is now stepping into the spotlight – meet Generation Alpha.

Generation Alpha, the cohort that started to emerge around a decade ago, represents the first group entirely born into the 21st century. Often referred to as “iPad babies” due to their birth coinciding with the launch of the iPad, they’re poised to become the largest generation yet, with a population expected to surpass 2 billion, according to Axios.

The enormity of Generation Alpha’s future influence has not gone unnoticed by marketers. For example, Claire’s, a brand synonymous with accessories for the younger demographic, has proactively extended its market research efforts to understand and connect with this emerging generation. The brand has launched an initiative known as the “Claire’s Collab,” bringing together a diverse group of Gen Z and Gen Alpha influencers, ranging from seven-year-old fashion designer Ila Palmer to multi-talented 13-year-old Cairo Hacks. This advisory group will have a hands-on role in shaping the Claire’s brand through styling photo shoots, producing content, and showcasing their talents.

Meanwhile, Francesca’s, another key player in the youth fashion industry, has adopted a different strategy by launching its first loyalty program, the Fran Club, aimed at forging deeper connections with its clientele. The program has shown promising results, with members visiting more frequently and spending significantly more both in-store and online compared to non-members. Francesca’s has also ventured into new media channels, such as connected TV advertising, to align with the media consumption habits of younger generations.

As companies adapt to the nuances of engaging with Gen Z and Gen Alpha, it’s evident that these younger generations are driving significant changes in marketing strategies. From immersive collaborations to personalized loyalty programs and innovative advertising channels, brands are learning to navigate the preferences and values of these digital natives. This generational shift underscores the importance of evolving marketing approaches to connect with the upcoming wave of consumers.
