Microsoft is implementing significant enhancements to File Explorer in Windows 11, aiming to deliver a faster and more streamlined experience for users. These updates, currently available in the latest Dev preview builds, focus on improving launch speed and reducing visual clutter, making file management more efficient for business owners and professionals.
Faster File Explorer Launch with Preloading
One of the key changes is the introduction of File Explorer preloading. This feature is designed to improve launch performance, particularly on devices with limited resources. While modern PCs already experience near-instantaneous launches, preloading ensures that even less powerful systems, including tablets and handhelds, benefit from quicker access to files and folders. For users who prefer not to have File Explorer running in the background, Microsoft provides an option to disable preloading, maintaining flexibility for various workflows.
Decluttered Context Menus for Enhanced Productivity
Microsoft is also refining the File Explorer context menu to help users find frequently used actions more easily. Rarely used options are being relocated into submenus, resulting in a cleaner and more intuitive interface. A new manage file flyout consolidates essential actions such as compressing files into ZIP archives, copying file paths, setting images as desktop backgrounds, and rotating images. Additionally, cloud file options are now grouped within a dedicated cloud provider flyout, which also includes the Send to My Phone feature.
What These Changes Mean for Businesses
- Improved efficiency for teams working on diverse devices
- Streamlined workflows with reduced menu clutter
- Customizable performance settings to suit different business needs
These updates are part of Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to optimize the Windows 11 user experience. The enhancements are expected to roll out to all users in early 2026, offering both speed and simplicity to help businesses stay productive in a fast-paced digital environment.
