Several global tech giants, including Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, have openly embraced Artificial Intelligence (AI). Apple, however, has remained relatively quiet about its use of this technology. Recent developments have revealed a shift in Apple’s approach. Key executives, including software leader Craig Federighi and head of services Eddie Cue, say Apple has led in AI for years by integrating machine learning into its products while keeping strict data privacy standards.
About eight years ago, during the rise of deep learning AI, Apple started to change its strategy. A year later, with the emergence of Generative AI like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the tech industry began to judge companies on their response to this trend. Apple refocused its efforts by moving top AI scientists from projects like self-driving cars and the mixed-reality Vision Pro headset to develop a unique Generative AI strategy. This new approach was revealed at the Worldwide Developers Conference.
Unlike its competitors, Apple chose to brand its technology as Apple Intelligence instead of Artificial Intelligence. This rebranding aims to distance Apple from the intimidating aspects of AI. Apple’s goal is to use Generative AI to enhance productivity and creativity, making AI tools accessible to its users. The company plans to integrate AI benefits seamlessly into daily workflows.
The products featured in the keynote, which included Generative AI, focused on practical uses. These products offer services like summarizing, transcribing, auto-completing emails, organizing inboxes, generating text from prompts, and removing photo-bombers from images. Apple aims to introduce these features naturally into normal workflows, boosting productivity and user satisfaction. Unique features like deep search in Photos and auto-generated email replies also received attention.
Apple also plans to upgrade Siri. Despite being seen as outdated, Apple promises to make Siri a better conversationalist and a powerful personal assistant capable of performing complex tasks across multiple apps. This vision for Siri will require strong support from developers.
Apple’s adoption of AI, or Apple Intelligence, may raise some societal concerns. AI’s potential to automate tasks traditionally requiring significant time might lead to unintended consequences. Questions arise about how Siri will process user preferences and decide on relevant news headlines. Despite its new label, Apple’s AI is set to significantly change how we work and interact with technology.
