Former President Donald Trump has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform the U.S. into a leading force in the cryptocurrency world if he is re-elected. Speaking at a bitcoin conference in Nashville, Tennessee, Trump detailed his vision of making the United States the “crypto capital of the planet” and proposed creating a bitcoin “strategic reserve” using existing government-held currency. He also committed to replacing Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Gary Gensler and establishing a crypto advisory council. “We will have regulations, but from now on the rules will be written by people who love your industry, not hate your industry,” Trump declared.
Trump’s Evolving View on Cryptocurrency
Trump’s address at the Bitcoin 2024 conference marks a notable shift in his perspective on cryptocurrency. Back in 2019, he criticized digital currencies as “highly volatile and based on thin air.” However, his stance has evolved, with his campaign recently beginning to accept cryptocurrency donations as of May. During his 50-minute speech, Trump emphasized his support for cryptocurrency in contrast to the Biden administration’s regulatory measures, which he claimed were “blocking your way.” He expressed a vision for cryptocurrency to be “mined, minted and made” in the U.S.
Advocating for Digital Asset Integration
Appealing to bitcoin enthusiasts, Trump referenced past U.S. law enforcement digital token seizures, stating, “They took it away from you,” and reiterated his promise to transform these seized assets into national assets for the benefit of all Americans. Additionally, he renewed his vow to commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the Silk Road marketplace, who is serving a life sentence connected to six overdose deaths linked to his site. Trump’s promise was met with applause from attendees, many wearing “Free Ross Day One” hats.
Backing from Political Allies
Tennessee U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn praised Trump’s announcement of a bitcoin strategic reserve, calling it a “historic moment.” This declaration followed a similar proposal by independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who had spoken at the conference the day before and also endorsed the idea of establishing a strategic bitcoin reserve.
