Why These Silicon Valley Titans Are Supporting Trump Over Biden?

Biden trump

Marc Andreessen, the co-founder of one of Silicon Valley’s leading venture capital firms, has traditionally been a Democrat, endorsing figures like Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton. However, for the 2024 presidential race, he is backing former President Donald Trump, believing Trump’s policies are more favorable for the tech and startup ecosystem than those of President Joe Biden.

In their latest podcast episode, “The Ben & Marc Show,” Andreessen and his fellow co-founder Ben Horowitz discussed their political stance. Horowitz acknowledged that their choice might upset many, including close friends and family. “We genuinely believe the future of our business, technology, and America is at stake,” Horowitz said.

Tech: A Cornerstone of American Success

The co-founders stressed that technological prowess, alongside the economy and military strength, has been crucial for U.S. success over the past century. This combination helped the U.S. peacefully overcome threats like the Soviet Union during the Cold War. “Without the tech part of that triangle, you won’t have the economy or the military,” Andreessen explained.

Concerns About Overregulation

Andreessen and Horowitz are worried that Biden’s policies are hindering startups with overregulation and excessive taxation. They believe Trump would encourage innovation, particularly criticizing the current administration’s approach to regulating artificial intelligence, which they fear could put the U.S. at a disadvantage globally. “Any limitations we impose on ourselves will disadvantage the U.S. compared to the rest of the world,” Andreessen stated.

Trump’s View on AI

At a recent dinner, Trump reportedly expressed the need for the U.S. to lead in AI advancements. “He said, ‘[AI] is very scary, but we absolutely have to win because if we don’t, China will,'” Horowitz quoted Trump.

Crypto Regulation and Tax Issues

The Biden administration’s stance on crypto regulation, as opposed to Trump’s, is another major issue for Andreessen. He highlighted that Trump’s approach is more supportive of the sector. The tipping point for Andreessen was Biden’s proposal to tax unrealized capital gains, which he argued would place a heavy financial burden on startups. “If you’re a venture firm, this could strip away parts of your portfolio annually. This makes startups completely unfeasible,” Andreessen explained.

A Vision for Technological Growth

Andreessen has been a strong advocate for the role of technology in societal growth. Last October, he published a “Techno-Optimist Manifesto,” urging technologists to view tech as a constant source of growth and to ignore detractors. His firm continues to be one of the largest venture investors in Silicon Valley, managing over $42 billion in assets.
