Google has introduced its latest AI data center chip, the sixth-generation Trillium, which is nearly five times faster than its predecessor. This new product positions Google as a strong contender against Nvidia, the dominant player in the AI data center chip market. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted Google’s decade-long pioneering efforts in AI chips during a product unveiling call. He stated, “I think Google was built for this moment.”
AI chips are crucial processors for artificial intelligence technologies, capable of handling vast amounts of AI-associated data. Currently, Nvidia controls about 80% of this market. However, Google has been gradually capturing a significant portion of the remaining 20% with various versions of its chips, as reported by Reuters. Google does not sell its chips directly but offers access through its cloud computing platform. If sold, Google’s chips would likely be priced around $30,000 to $40,000, comparable to Nvidia’s Blackwell chip, announced earlier this year. Both Blackwell and Trillium are expected to be operational by late 2024, according to CNBC.
Nvidia has been a leading name in processing chips for decades, having started in the early 1990s by making processors for video game consoles like the Microsoft Xbox and Sony PlayStation. The company later expanded to chips for personal computers, vehicles, and cloud computing. Despite Nvidia’s annual revenues being overshadowed by rivals like Intel, it remains a key player in the AI chip revolution. However, with tech giants like Google, Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI, and Amazon developing their own AI chips, Nvidia will face increased competition.
Interestingly, Google will be one of the first cloud companies to offer client access to Nvidia’s Blackwell chip, as reported by The Verge. This partnership is not new; Google and Nvidia have collaborated since 2014 when Nvidia chips were integrated into Google’s Chromebooks. This indicates a potentially more cooperative industry than previously thought.
As the demand for efficient AI chips continues to grow, companies like Google, Nvidia, and others will be fiercely competing. Let’s hope that this competition remains healthy and innovative.
