Believe it or not, the richest Oscar winners aren’t A-list actors at all but directors, producers and even tech moguls. It surprised me that the top name on the list is Steven Rales – a businessman who co-founded Danaher – with about $7.8 billion. He produces indie films (he even co-produced the Oscar-winning short The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar in 2024) but made his billions in medical tech. Just behind him are Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie ($7.1 billion). Lurie’s claim to Oscar fame is producing documentary winners (Inside JobInocenteSummer of Soul), while Spielberg won Best Director Oscars for Schindler’s List (1994) and Saving Private Ryan (1999). These three top the list.

Who else made the list?

The rest is a mix of familiar names and a few surprises.

Jeff Skoll

Estimated Net Worth: about $5.3 billion

Jeff Skoll first became wealthy as the first president of the tech company eBay. After leaving the company, he shifted his focus toward filmmaking and philanthropy.

Through his production company Participant Media, Skoll has backed numerous socially conscious films. Many of these projects have received critical acclaim and Academy Award recognition.

Skoll represents a growing trend of tech entrepreneurs using their wealth to support impactful storytelling in cinema.

George Lucas

Estimated Net Worth: about $5.1 billion

George Lucas is one of the most influential figures in modern cinema. He created the global blockbuster franchises Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

Lucas won an Oscar through technical and honorary awards tied to his groundbreaking work in filmmaking technology. However, the majority of his wealth came from selling his company Lucasfilm to The Walt Disney Company in 2012 for around $4 billion.

That sale turned Lucas into one of Hollywood’s wealthiest creators and solidified his place among the richest Oscar winners.

Oprah Winfrey

Estimated Net Worth: about $3.2 billion

Oprah Winfrey is one of the most powerful media figures in history. Known as the host of The Oprah Winfrey Show, she built a vast media empire that includes television networks, production companies, publishing ventures, and investments.

In 2011, Winfrey received the Academy’s humanitarian Oscar, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, recognizing her extensive philanthropic work.

She became the first Black woman to reach billionaire status in media and continues to expand her influence through film production, acting, and philanthropy.

Steve Tisch

Estimated Net Worth: about $2.2 billion

Steve Tisch is both a Hollywood producer and a sports executive. He is the co-owner of the NFL team New York Giants.

In the film industry, Tisch has produced several successful movies and documentaries. One of his Oscar wins came for the short documentary Twin Towers, which won Best Documentary Short Subject at the Academy Awards.

His career demonstrates how Hollywood and professional sports can intersect, creating opportunities for wealth and influence across industries.

Peter Jackson

Estimated Net Worth: about $1.9 billion

Peter Jackson rose to international fame as the director of the epic The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which won multiple Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director.

Jackson’s wealth comes not only from filmmaking but also from the sale of his visual-effects company Weta Digital, which was sold to Unity Software in a deal worth billions.

This combination of creative storytelling and cutting-edge technology has made Jackson one of the richest filmmakers in history.

Pat Hanrahan

Estimated Net Worth: about $1.7 billion

Pat Hanrahan is not a traditional Hollywood name, but his work has transformed modern filmmaking. A professor and computer graphics expert, Hanrahan helped develop groundbreaking rendering technologies used in animated films.

He won an Academy Award for Technical Achievement for innovations that advanced computer graphics in film production. His work has influenced companies like Pixar and many other digital-effects studios.

Hanrahan’s story highlights how technology innovators can become just as important to cinema as directors and actors.

Dick Wolf

Estimated Net Worth: about $1.2 billion

Dick Wolf built one of the most successful television franchises of all time: Law & Order.

His shows have dominated television for decades, generating massive syndication revenue. Wolf has also been recognized by the Academy for his contributions to film and television production.

His wealth largely stems from television licensing deals and long-running crime drama series.

Tyler Perry

Estimated Net Worth: about $1.4–$2 billion

Tyler Perry is one of the most successful independent filmmakers in the world. Known for creating the iconic character Madea, Perry built a massive entertainment empire that includes film, television, and theater productions.

His studio complex, Tyler Perry Studios, is one of the largest film studios in the United States. Perry’s wealth comes from owning the majority of his content and maintaining full creative control over his projects

James Cameron

Estimated Net Worth: about $1 billion

James Cameron is known for directing some of the highest-grossing films ever made, including Titanic and Avatar.

Both films were groundbreaking in terms of technology and storytelling. Titanic won multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Cameron’s wealth comes from box-office success, profit participation deals, and the continued expansion of the Avatar franchise.

How did they get so rich?

An Oscar was usually just one highlight in a larger empire. For example, Rales’s billions come from running Danaher and even owning part of an NBA team, not from making films. Spielberg’s fortune is built on movies and theme-park deals (Forbes notes he’s the highest-grossing director ever, worth ~$7.1B). Lucas made billions in Star Wars and sold Lucasfilm to Disney for about $4 billion in 2012. Oprah’s wealth is rooted in her media company and investments. Hanrahan’s came from tech (Pixar shares and selling Tableau software) more than from Oscar statuettes. In fact, Forbes’s 2026 “celebrity billionaires” list had Spielberg at #1 with $7.1B and notes franchises like Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones as cash cows. The point is, these winners hit it big with business deals, box-office hits and investments – the Oscars are a nice bonus on top.

Bottom Line

These twelve billionaires show that an Oscar win and a huge fortune do occasionally go hand in hand – but usually the Oscar is a sideshow. Each of them parlayed talent or business smarts into massive wealth (from blockbuster films, sports teams, tech companies or media empires), and picked up an Academy Award on the way. In other words, it wasn’t the trophy that made them rich – their multi-billion-dollar careers did. The Oscars just add a bit of Hollywood sparkle to fortunes largely built elsewhere.
