Let’s jump straight in – the 2026 World Cup runs from June 11 to July 19, 2026. It’s the first World Cup in the summer and the first to be co-hosted by three countries (USA, Mexico, Canada). All told, 16 cities will host matches: 11 in the USA, 3 in Mexico, and 2 in Canada. Opening matchday is June 11, 2026, when Mexico plays at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City (plus a second Group A game at Guadalajara). The next day (June 12), Canada and the USA kick off their campaigns at home in Toronto and Los Angeles, respectively. The tournament ends with the final on July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium (New York/New Jersey).

Teams and Format

This will be the first 48-team World Cup, an increase from 32. The teams are split into 12 groups of 4. In the group stage, each team plays 3 games; the top two in each group and the 8 best third-place teams advance to a new Round of 32. After that, it’s straight knockout rounds (Round of 32, Round of 16, quarterfinals, semis, final). In total, the tournament spans 39 days with 104 matches (up from 64 games in the old 32-team format). As hosts, the USA, Canada and Mexico all automatically qualify. Don’t forget to wear your teams’ Adidas soccer jerseys to show support.

Qualified teams so far (by confederation) include:

AFC (8 teams): Australia, Iran, Japan, Jordan (debut), Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Uzbekistan (debut).

CAF (9 teams): Algeria, Cape Verde (debut), Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia.
