Cengage Group, a leading education technology company, has announced the closure of its Boston headquarters as part of a strategic shift to a fully remote workforce. This move also includes the closure of its offices in Detroit and Cincinnati, signaling a significant transformation in the company’s operational model.
Boston Headquarters and Office Closures
Since 2014, Cengage Group has maintained its corporate headquarters in Boston, with locations at 3 Center Plaza and 200 Pier 4 Blvd. in the Seaport District. The company, which originally moved its headquarters from Stamford, Connecticut to Boston’s Channel Center, later relocated to the Seaport just before the COVID-19 pandemic. As remote work became widespread, Cengage began operating without a centralized office, and said it was subleasing its Boston office space.
Company Background and Global Reach
Cengage, which unified its businesses under the Cengage name in February 2026 after five years as Cengage Group, says it supports nearly 16 million digital users annually in more than 100 countries, spanning its Higher Education, School, Work and English Language Learning markets. The company also says it serves close to 70% of all U.S. higher education institutions and K-12 school districts.
Strategic Shift to Remote Work
According to company officials, the decision to close physical offices aligns with the evolving needs of employees and the future of work. As of October 2026, the only U.S. office location listed on the company’s website is in Independence, Kentucky. Cengage stated that this transition will enable better alignment of its physical footprint with organizational goals while continuing to deliver value to its customers.
Integration of Artificial Intelligence
In 2024, Cengage began integrating generative AI solutions into its learning platforms. This adoption of advanced technology aims to enhance the educational experience and provide innovative tools for both students and educators.
- Closure of Boston, Detroit, and Cincinnati offices
- Full transition to remote workforce
- Continued commitment to digital education solutions
- Integration of AI into learning platforms
As the company evaluates its future office space needs, Cengage remains focused on adapting to industry trends and supporting the changing landscape of education technology.
