In an exciting move, United Airlines is set to enhance the travel experience by offering free in-flight WiFi, powered by Starlink, Elon Musk’s groundbreaking satellite internet service. This initiative will be available across more than 1,000 of United’s aircraft starting next year, marking a major upgrade for travelers.
“Everything you can do on the ground, you’ll soon be able to do onboard a United plane at 35,000 feet, just about anywhere in the world,” said United’s CEO, Scott Kirby, during the official announcement.
Currently, MileagePlus members pay about $8 for WiFi access on United flights, while non-members pay $10. But with this partnership with SpaceX, passengers can expect a significant improvement in connectivity at no extra cost.
SpaceX President and COO, Gwynne Shotwell, underscored the innovation, stating, “With Starlink onboard your United flight, you’ll have access to the world’s most advanced high-speed internet from gate to gate, and all the miles in between.”
While United is upping its game, it’s not the only airline offering free WiFi. Delta Air Lines already provides complimentary WiFi on domestic routes for SkyMiles members, and smaller carriers like Hawaiian Airlines and JetBlue also offer free internet access. According to the Airline Passenger Experience Association, about one in five U.S. passengers take advantage of in-flight WiFi.
This shift by United positions them as a major player in providing seamless connectivity for passengers, taking inflight travel to a new level.
