What Impacts Will Truth Social’s IPO Have on Donald Trump’s Business Empire?

In a recent financial development that has caught the attention of Wall Street and social media users alike, Donald Trump’s social media venture, Truth Social, has made its debut on the public market. This move marks a significant milestone for the former president’s business endeavors, as it is the first time in nearly three decades that a part of Trump’s business empire has gone public. The launch was met with a notable surge in stock prices, with Truth Social’s shares initially jumping 56% to $78, before settling at just under $58 by the close of the trading day – a still impressive 16% increase.

Despite the enthusiasm in the market, analysts are raising eyebrows over the company’s valuation, currently pegged at nearly $11 billion. This figure is deemed “eye-popping” by CNN, especially when considering Truth Social’s modest user base and revenue figures. In its first nine months of 2023, the platform generated $3.4 million in revenue and reported losses of around $49 million. Furthermore, Truth Social’s monthly active user count in the U.S. is estimated to be around 1 million, starkly lower than the user bases of Facebook and Twitter at their respective public debuts.

The platform’s valuation and performance have led some to categorize it as a “meme stock,” implying a valuation not grounded in financial reality. This skepticism is reflected in the comments of analysts, with some suggesting that Truth Social’s stock is significantly overvalued, estimating its fair value closer to $2 a share rather than its closing price of $58 on its first trading day.

Contrastingly, Reddit’s recent IPO tells a different story, with a more grounded valuation of $6.4 billion. The platform, known for its vast user-generated content, reported revenue of $804 million in 2023, significantly outpacing Truth Social’s financial performance. Reddit’s data, particularly valuable for AI training, even attracted a $60 million annual deal with Google for real-time access, highlighting the tangible assets underpinning its market valuation.

As the dust settles on Truth Social’s public market debut, the future of the platform remains uncertain. With its valuation under scrutiny and comparisons to more financially sound social media ventures, the question of whether Truth Social can sustain its momentum and grow its user base and revenue looms large. Yet, amidst these uncertainties, one thing remains clear: Donald Trump, a steadfast user and the face of Truth Social, shows no signs of stepping away from the platform that now plays a pivotal role in both his business and political endeavors.
