Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, who has been widely celebrated for his transformative impact on the automotive industry and advancing the electric vehicle movement, is set to receive a record-breaking payout estimated at around $50 billion. This monumental compensation plan was approved by shareholders after a vote, a decision previously blocked by a federal judge. The outcome was unveiled during Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting at its new auto and battery factory in Austin, Texas.
In addition to the compensation decision, shareholders endorsed relocating Tesla’s corporate headquarters from Delaware to Texas. Musk and the board cited perceived unfair treatment from Delaware’s courts as the primary reason for the move. Earlier this year, a Delaware judge had rejected Musk’s compensation plan. Following the vote’s approval, Musk expressed his gratitude and excitement to the shareholders.
This vote also served as a referendum on Musk’s leadership of Tesla, as some investors have voiced concerns that Musk’s focus has shifted to his other ventures, including SpaceX, The Boring Company, an unnamed social media platform, and xAI, his AI organization. Tesla’s market value, which was about $1.24 trillion in late 2021, has since dropped by over half, attributed to declining car sales, increasing competition in the electric vehicle sector, and uncertain directions in robotics and autonomous vehicle technology.
Despite these concerns, the majority of shareholders supported the payout, arguing it aligns with Musk’s contributions to Tesla. Robyn Denholm, Tesla’s board chair, emphasized the importance of Musk’s continued leadership and vision for the company’s future success.
Initially approved by over 70% of Tesla shareholders in 2018, the compensation package, tied to ambitious financial targets, was nullified by a Delaware judge after a lawsuit from investors. The judge had criticized the package as excessively large and the approval process as flawed. With the recent shareholder vote, Musk is poised to gain more control and influence over Tesla, though his future actions remain uncertain.
