Austin-based Tacora Capital has successfully raised nearly $269 million for its second debt fund, according to an SEC filing. The venture debt firm’s first fund, which sought to reach $300 million, gained significant backing from Peter Thiel in 2022. Thiel, known for his pivotal role in the tech world, shared his excitement, saying, “I’m excited to be their first investor,” highlighting the unique financial needs of startups and Tacora’s ability to meet those demands.
Tacora Capital’s Approach to Venture Debt
Tacora Capital specializes in providing venture debt to startups that are already backed by venture capital, typically aligning with equity fundraising rounds. Unlike traditional loans, venture debt is often less structured and includes fewer financial covenants. This approach focuses more on the credibility of the startup’s investors and the company’s stage of growth, offering flexible terms to fuel expansion.
A Busy Period for Peter Thiel
While it’s unclear if Thiel is involved in Tacora’s new fund, the period has been quite active for him. Recent reports indicate that his San Francisco-based Founders Fund is negotiating a substantial $3 billion raise for a new growth-stage fund. This comes after the firm made the strategic decision to cut its eighth fund to $900 million, rolling over the rest into a new ninth fund.
Founders Fund has been highly active in 2024, making notable investments in various companies, including fintech startup Ramp, defense firm Anduril Industries, and AI/data platform Databricks. Known for its diverse portfolio, including heavy hitters like Airbnb, Palantir Technologies, and Stripe, the firm continues to back innovative companies in critical industries.
Tacora Capital’s new fund further solidifies its position in the venture debt market, building on the confidence shown by investors like Peter Thiel. As the market continues to evolve, venture debt offers a flexible and dynamic financing option for high-growth startups. Meanwhile, Thiel’s ongoing investments through Founders Fund highlight his continuous push to shape the future of tech and innovation.
