Sam’s Club members are expressing their frustration on social media over a new change set to take effect on August 19.
Sam’s Club Changes Free Shipping Policy
In a move that has angered many, Sam’s Club, a rival to Costco, announced via email that starting August 19, free shipping will no longer be available for Plus members unless their orders exceed $50.
New Shipping Fees Stir Member Backlash
For purchases under $50, members will now face an $8 flat rate shipping fee, with some category exclusions still applying. This policy change has led to a wave of dissatisfaction, with some members threatening to switch their loyalty to Costco.
One member tweeted, “@SamsClub When we became Plus members it was sold to us on ‘Free shipping,’ so we said…ok, let’s join. This move is complete BS. Without this perk, why should we stay as Plus??? We see no benefits for the cost.”
Another longtime member voiced their frustration, saying, “Been a member for 15 years, and PAY a membership for a reason, and it’s not to be charged even more for shipping. Literally just cancelled my membership and moved to #Costco.”
Company’s Response and Financial Performance
While Sam’s Club has not yet responded to the backlash, the company told FOX Business that it is “continuously working on providing an easier and more convenient shopping experience for our members.”
Owned by Walmart, Sam’s Club reported a strong fiscal Q1 of 2025, with $161.5 billion in revenue, a 6% increase from the previous year. Sam’s Club itself saw net sales of $21.4 billion in the quarter, a 4.6% rise from Q1 2024, and a 13.3% increase in membership income, ending the quarter with the highest total membership number in its history.
Doug McMillon, Walmart Inc. CEO, stated in a company release, “We’re focused on saving our customers both money and time. We’re people-led and tech-powered, and that combination is propelling our business.”
As of Monday morning, Walmart Inc. shares were up over 34% year-over-year.
