Riot Games has announced a significant restructuring of its 2XKO development team, resulting in layoffs that impact approximately 80 employees. This decision stems from the game’s inability to reach the momentum necessary to sustain a team of its current size. According to Tom Cannon, executive producer of 2XKO, the game has resonated with a passionate core audience, yet overall engagement has not met the expectations required for long-term support.
Restructuring for Sustainability
The downsizing reflects a strategic shift in Riot Games’ operational approach. Cannon emphasized that this move is not a reflection on the individual employees affected, nor does it signal the end of the 2XKO project. Instead, it represents a recalibration aimed at providing the game with a more sustainable future. Riot Games is committed to assisting those affected by exploring opportunities within the company and offering a minimum of six months’ notice and severance pay.
Impact on the Development Team
Almost half of the global development team for 2XKO has been affected by this restructuring. As Riot Games expanded its reach from PC to console, consistent trends in player engagement were observed, prompting the need for this organizational change. Despite the challenges, the company remains focused on reshaping the team to align with the game’s future trajectory.
- 2XKO launched in early access for PC in October 2025.
- The console release followed on January 20, 2026.
- The game has been in development since 2019, initially announced as Project L.
Riot Games’ decision to reduce the team size is part of a broader strategy to ensure the game’s viability and success in a competitive market. By realigning resources and focusing on core strengths, the company aims to navigate the challenges of the gaming industry while maintaining its commitment to its workforce and player community.
