AI Infrastructure Startup Nscale Raises $2 Billion in Europe’s Largest Series C Ever

Data center server infrastructure powering AI workloads for companies like Nscale

London-based AI infrastructure company Nscale has raised $2 billion in a Series C funding round, the largest such round in European history. The deal values the company at $14.6 billion and was led by Norwegian conglomerate Aker ASA and 8090 Industries, with participation from Nvidia, Citadel, Dell, Jane Street, Lenovo, Nokia, Point72, Fidelity Management and Research Company, G Squared, Astra Capital Management, and Linden Advisors.

Founded in 2024 by CEO Josh Payne, Nscale builds and operates hyperscale data centers optimized for AI workloads, offering vertically integrated GPU compute, networking, data services, and orchestration software. The company’s client roster already includes Microsoft and OpenAI, two of the most compute-hungry organizations in the industry.

Nscale Adds Tech Industry Heavyweights to Its Board

Alongside the funding announcement, Nscale revealed three major additions to its board of directors. Former Meta chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg, former UK deputy prime minister and Meta executive Nick Clegg, and former Yahoo president Susan Decker have all joined the company’s leadership team. The appointments signal Nscale’s ambition to move from a fast-growing startup into a publicly traded enterprise.

Payne told CNBC that the company has hired Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan as underwriters for a potential initial public offering. He added that a listing could come “as early as this year,” though no official timeline has been set. The Financial Times previously reported that the company was targeting the second half of 2026 for its market debut.

The AI Infrastructure Buildout Continues at Massive Scale

The round reflects a broader trend of enormous capital flowing into the physical and digital infrastructure required to power AI systems. In just the first week of March 2026, at least three funding rounds of $500 million or more closed in the AI infrastructure and space technology sectors. Nscale’s $2 billion raise topped them all.

The company plans to use the capital to expand its data center footprint across Europe, North America, and Asia, including a project in Norway that has drawn comparisons to the Stargate initiative in the United States. That project, backed by Aker and the Norwegian government, aims to leverage the country’s abundant renewable energy to power AI compute at scale.

For venture capital observers, Nscale’s trajectory is striking. The company went from launch to a $14.6 billion valuation in under two years, fueled by insatiable demand for AI compute capacity. Its rise mirrors a pattern seen across the AI infrastructure sector, where companies like Crusoe Energy and CoreWeave have raised billions to build the GPU-powered data centers that AI models require.

What This Means for Startups and the Broader AI Ecosystem

Nscale’s mammoth raise underscores a growing reality for AI startups and the companies that depend on them. Access to compute remains one of the most significant bottlenecks in the industry. As billion-dollar AI ventures proliferate, the demand for GPU capacity is outpacing supply, driving valuations for infrastructure providers to levels once reserved for the software companies they serve.

For founders building AI products, the expansion of hyperscale providers like Nscale could eventually ease compute constraints and bring down costs. In the near term, however, the sheer volume of investment flowing into infrastructure signals that the AI industry’s appetite for processing power is far from satisfied.

Nscale’s planned IPO, if it materializes in 2026, would be one of the most closely watched public offerings of the year and a test of whether public market investors share the enthusiasm that has driven private valuations in the AI sector to unprecedented heights.
