Meta is set to initiate another round of layoffs, impacting around 3,000 employees—approximately 5% of its 72,000-strong workforce. This move, revealed in an internal memo, underscores the ongoing turbulence within the tech industry as companies continue to navigate economic challenges.
How Meta Employees Will Be Notified
According to Vice President of Human Resources Janelle Gale, employees affected by these performance-related cuts will receive email notifications starting Monday morning. Timing will vary by location, with the first emails going out at 1 p.m. PT on Sunday for some global employees, while U.S.-based staff will be informed by 5 a.m. PT. International notifications are expected to continue until February 18.
Once notified, affected employees will lose access to Meta’s internal systems within an hour. The email will contain termination details and information regarding severance packages. While Meta’s offices will remain open, employees have been encouraged to work from home if possible, which will still count toward their required in-office days.
Meta’s New Performance Management Strategy
This round of job cuts aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s recent push for stricter performance management. Previously, underperforming employees had up to a year to improve. Now, the company is accelerating the process, removing low performers more aggressively within the current performance cycle, which concludes in February.
Tech Industry Layoffs Continue
Meta isn’t the only tech giant making tough decisions. Amazon and Salesforce have also announced significant layoffs, reflecting a broader shift in the industry. As companies recalibrate their workforce strategies, these job cuts highlight the evolving landscape of Big Tech and its response to market pressures.
This latest wave of layoffs signals a pivotal moment for Meta and the tech industry at large, as companies refine their operations to stay competitive in an unpredictable economic climate.
