MENLO PARK: Meta has quietly released a new standalone iOS application called Forum, a Reddit-style alternative built on top of Facebook Groups. The app appeared in the US Apple App Store on May 22, 2026, with no press conference, no blog post, and no formal announcement. Social media consultant Matt Navarra was the first to spot the listing, with TechCrunch, CNBC, and Engadget picking up the story within hours.

The market read it as a direct shot at Reddit. RDDT closed May 22 down nearly 6%, one of the worst single-day drops for the stock since its 2024 IPO. Analysts at Truist called Forum “an attempt by Meta to compete against Reddit as an online forum for public discourse” and flagged it as “a new threat.” A Meta spokesperson later confirmed to Engadget that Forum is still in testing: “We test lots of new products publicly to see what people find interesting and useful.”

What is Meta Forum?

Forum is a standalone iOS app from Meta that strips Facebook Groups out of the main Facebook feed and puts them in a dedicated interface focused on community-driven discussion. Users sign in with their Facebook accounts, load into their existing groups, and post under anonymized nicknames. Posts sync bidirectionally between Forum and the main Facebook app. The app launched in the US Apple App Store on May 22, 2026 and is not yet available in the EU, UK, Australia, or on Android.

Meta describes Forum as “a dedicated space built for deeper discussions, real answers and communities you care about.” The feed is centered on conversations within groups rather than algorithmic suggestions from the main feed. In Meta’s framing, the goal is to show users “what real people are saying, not just what’s trending.”

Is Meta Forum a Reddit competitor?

Yes — and the market priced it that way within hours. Reddit shares dropped nearly 6% on May 22 after the app was spotted, with CNBC and Stocktwits reporting the stock fell to near one-month lows. Truist analysts framed the risk as “a gradual erosion of Reddit’s utility for casual users who have less community loyalty to Reddit and simply want answers.”

That phrase — “simply want answers” — is the actual competitive thesis. Reddit’s most valuable traffic in 2025 and early 2026 came from users who landed on long-tail Google queries and were routed into Reddit threads. Meta is targeting that exact behavior with the Ask feature, which synthesizes answers across a user’s Groups instead of forcing manual search.

What AI features does Meta Forum have?

Forum ships with two AI features. The first is Ask, a chatbot that pulls together responses from across a user’s joined Groups in answer to a question. Instead of searching each community manually, users get a synthesized response drawn from existing discussions. The second is an AI assistant for Group admins that helps with membership management, flagging rule violations, and moderating content at scale.

The admin assistant is the more strategically interesting of the two. Community management at scale is one of the unsolved bottlenecks of every social platform. If Meta can offload moderation labor to an AI agent that lives inside the admin console, Forum becomes meaningfully cheaper to grow than Reddit, which still relies almost entirely on unpaid volunteer moderators.

How does Meta Forum handle pseudonyms?

Users can post under anonymized nicknames similar to Reddit usernames. Other group members cannot see the real identity behind a nickname. Group administrators and moderators, however, can — Meta retains the link between a Forum nickname and the underlying Facebook account throughout. As IBTimes noted, “pseudonyms hide nothing from group admins.”

This is a meaningful product decision. Reddit’s pseudonymity is closer to actual anonymity for most users — accounts are not tied to legal identities, and moderators see the same usernames everyone else does. Forum’s model collapses the privacy distance between user and admin to zero. For communities discussing sensitive topics — health, addiction, sexuality, employer reviews — that difference is not cosmetic. It changes what users are willing to post.

Where can I download Meta Forum?

Forum is available only in the United States Apple App Store as of May 22, 2026. It is not listed in the EU, UK, or Australian stores. There is no Android version, and Meta has not announced a release date or rollout schedule. The app requires a Facebook account to sign in.

What Meta Forum means for founders

The launch matters less as a Reddit story than as a platform-risk story. Meta is using its 3-billion-user moat to attack a category where Reddit has been the default for nearly two decades. If you have built a community on Reddit — a subreddit driving signups, a brand presence anchored in AMAs, a paid acquisition channel that depends on Reddit ads — Forum is a leading indicator. The category is no longer settled.

The second thread is the quiet launch itself. Meta did not ship Forum with the loud, ad-supported rollouts that defined Threads or the original Instagram acquisition. The spokesperson framing — “we test lots of new products” — leaves Meta an explicit out. Quiet launches have become Meta’s default playbook for product bets it is not yet ready to commit to. Watch what happens to Forum over the next 60 days. If the app picks up usage signal, expect a louder relaunch with paid acquisition behind it. If it stalls, expect Meta to sunset it without fanfare, the way it ended the original standalone Groups app in 2017.

The third thread is the AI search angle. Forum’s Ask feature is Meta’s first serious attempt to build a community-grounded answer engine — the same general idea Reddit has been monetizing through its data licensing deals with Google and OpenAI. If Forum reaches enough scale to make Ask useful, Meta no longer needs to license community data to anyone. It owns the substrate. For founders building in the AI-search and answer-engine layer, that is the long-term story to track.

What to watch next

Three signals will define whether Forum becomes a real Reddit competitor or another Meta product that fades. The first is the Android release. A quiet US-only iOS launch keeps Meta’s options open. An Android push and international rollout would signal commitment. The second is paid acquisition. If Meta starts running Forum ads inside the main Facebook and Instagram feeds, that is the public signal the company has decided the product is worth the spend. The third is Reddit’s response. RDDT recovered some ground in after-hours trading on May 22, but the company has not yet commented publicly on Forum. Reddit’s next earnings call and any product announcements through the summer will reveal whether management treats Forum as a real threat or shrugs it off.

For now, the takeaway is simple. The community discussion category, which has belonged to Reddit since 2005, has a new entrant with 3 billion existing users and an AI-native product. The next six months will decide whether that matters.
