Secrets Behind Helion Energy’s $425 Million Series F Funding

Helion

Fusion startup Helion Energy has raised $425 million in its Series F funding round, bringing its valuation to $5.4 billion as it moves closer to commercializing its groundbreaking fusion technology. The round attracted new investors, including Lightspeed Venture Partners and SoftBank Vision Fund 2, along with returning backers such as Sam Altman, Mithril Capital Management, Capricorn Investment Group, Good Ventures, and Nucor Corp. This new funding highlights the increasing interest in clean and alternative energy sources, especially amid rising global power demands driven by advancements in AI and other industries.

Building on Momentum

Helion, based in Everett, Washington, has now raised over $1 billion since its inception. The company previously secured a $500 million Series E round in November 2021. This continued investment signals growing confidence in Helion’s innovative approach to fusion energy. In 2023, the startup entered into a major power purchase agreement with Microsoft, which will begin receiving electricity from Helion’s fusion plant in 2028. The company is also collaborating with Nucor Corp. on a new power facility expected to be operational in the 2030s.

Polaris and the Future of Fusion Energy

Helion has begun operations on its seventh-generation prototype, Polaris, which is set to be the first to generate electricity from fusion energy. Co-founder and CEO David Kirtley emphasized the transformative potential of this technology, aiming to meet the world’s growing energy needs while maintaining U.S. leadership in the energy sector. If successful, Polaris could be a significant step toward solving global energy challenges.

Fusion Industry’s Investment Landscape

Helion’s Series F round is the second-largest fusion-related funding round of the year, following Pacific Fusion’s $900 million Series A in October, led by General Catalyst. Since the beginning of 2024, fusion startups have collectively raised over $7 billion through around two dozen investments exceeding $200 million. This surge in funding highlights the growing excitement and potential of the fusion energy sector as investors see the promise of clean and sustainable power solutions.
