The Exploration Company has raised $160 million in a Series B funding round, positioning itself as a challenger to SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft. Co-led by Balderton Capital and Plural, the round brings the company’s total funding to nearly $230 million. The funds will support the development and testing of Nyx, a reusable, in-orbit refillable spacecraft designed to transport both people and cargo. Nyx is compatible with multiple heavy launchers and aims to serve various space stations, making it a versatile contender in the growing space transport market.
Scaling Ambitions
Co-founder and CEO Hélène Huby highlighted the company’s significant operational and financial achievements over the past year, including securing major service contracts with space agencies and commercial clients. The latest capital infusion will help scale operations and further establish Nyx as a competitive player in the space sector.
Space Startup Funding Trends
The Exploration Company’s funding is part of a broader surge in space sector investment. In 2024, space startups have attracted $7.7 billion across 338 funding rounds, surpassing last year’s total.
Other notable fundraises include:
- Firefly Aerospace: Raised $175 million in a Series D round, based in Cedar Park, Texas.
- Despite increased funding this year, totals remain below the record highs of $12 billion and $9 billion seen in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
Investor enthusiasm persists as advancements in space technology drive interest, even amid fluctuations in funding levels.
With significant funding and a bold vision, The Exploration Company is poised to make an impact in the competitive space transport market. As the Nyx spacecraft moves closer to realization, the company aims to challenge industry leaders and contribute to the next phase of space exploration.
