Costco has announced a pay increase for its hourly workers. CEO Ron Vachris shared in an internal memo that service assistants, service clerks, and meat cutters in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Canada will receive a $1 per hour raise.
New Wage Structure
With this pay increase, the lowest wage for hourly workers is now $19.50 per hour. This move is part of Costco’s efforts to maintain highly competitive wages within the industry. The new rates will be effective starting July 22 and apply to all hourly employees, regardless of their position on the company’s pay scale.
Employee Earnings
By the end of 2023, the median annual income for a Costco employee was $50,202. According to ZipRecruiter, the average hourly pay for a Costco worker in the U.S. is currently $22.20 per hour. This $1 raise follows a previous increase of $0.50 in March, marking the second wage hike for 2024.
CEO’s Statement
During a call with investors in May, Vachris expressed pride in the workforce: “Since January, my time has been focused on working closely with the teams around the world to ensure we continue to deliver the best quality merchandise at our best value for our members. I’m incredibly proud of our employees, and I believe our consistency of results is a reflection of their commitment to our members and to each other.”

Costco reported robust fiscal Q3 2024 earnings with net sales of $57.39 billion, a 9.1% increase from the same period last year. Year over year, the warehouse chain’s performance has surged by 67% as of Wednesday morning.
