Apple is set to enhance its AirPods with a groundbreaking live translation feature designed to facilitate smoother conversations between users who speak different languages. This new capability, expected to be rolled out later this year through a software update, will utilize the familiar AirPods linked to iPhones, enabling users to communicate effortlessly across language barriers.
Imagine conversing with someone who speaks Spanish, while you only speak English. With this upcoming feature, a Spanish speaker can engage in dialogue, and their speech will be translated in real-time by the listener’s iPhone. The translation will then be delivered audibly through the listener’s AirPods, allowing for a fluid exchange of ideas. The listener can respond in English, and the process will continue seamlessly, effectively bridging the communication gap.
While Apple is making strides in this area, it is worth noting that competitors like Google have been offering similar live translation features in their Pixel Buds since 2017. The Pixel Buds Pro further enhanced this functionality in 2022, allowing for multilingual conversations. However, users have reported that while the technology works effectively, translation can still sometimes produce awkward or inaccurate results.
Other devices, including Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses and Humane’s discontinued Ai Pin, have explored live translation; however, they face challenges such as limitations in the number of supported languages, delays, and difficulties accurately interpreting slang.
What sets Apple’s AirPods apart is their widespread availability. Many users already own a pair, which means they will only need to download the software update for access to this innovative feature. Recent estimates suggest that Apple sold approximately 75 million pairs of AirPods in 2023 and 82 million in 2022, marking a significant segment of Apple’s overall sales. The AirPods division alone generated over $18 billion in revenue for Apple in 2023, surpassing the total annual revenue of Airbnb.
With predictions indicating that AirPods will outsell iPads by 2030, this real-time translation function could further solidify their position as one of Apple’s most profitable products, alongside iPhones and Macs. As innovation continues to transform communication, the upcoming capabilities of AirPods will be a game changer for users across the globe.
