American Airlines Adjusts Long Haul Flights due to Boeing Dreamliner Delays

American Airlines

On Friday, American Airlines announced the downsizing of some long-range flights stretching from the latter part of the year into early 2025. This significant operational change stems from issues surrounding the delayed delivery of Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner. This situation follows the trend of many other airline carriers who find it necessary to alter schedules as a result of setbacks from the plane manufacturing entity.

In lieu of the anticipated six units, American Airlines is forecasted to take receipt of just three Dreamliners within the year, as mentioned in a filing they made on Thursday. With challenges of parts shortages impeding the possibility of escalating the production of wide-body planes, Boeing declared earlier in the week.

To provide clarity on the implications these adjustments may have on passengers, American Airlines expressed, “We’re making these adjustments now to ensure we’re able to re-accommodate customers on affected flights.” With a customer-focused approach, they plan to actively communicate with airline customers who may be affected by these changes, providing alternate travel arrangements.

Coming to the end of the summer period, American is planning to suspend some routes leading to Europe, some of which includes; New York’s JFK to Athens, with effect from September 3rd with the seasonal route previously set to end October 26th. JFK to Barcelona will also be affected from September 3rd, with the year-round route set to resume sometime next year.

Routes from Dallas/Fort Worth International to Dublin and Rome that were planned as year-round flights will likewise be suspended starting from October 26th, however, it will return by next year. As well, service between the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport to Kona in Hawaii, will not be available this winter.

Despite the temporary halting of these routes, the airline vows to keep up with their commitment to their customers and team members, mitigating any negative effects of these necessary adjustments, while continuing to render a comprehensive global service. Additionally, American plans to deliver 55 long-haul international routes throughout the winter season.

They plan on introducing nonstop daily service from Philadelphia to Barcelona starting in January and also a transient service between Miami and Montevideo, Uruguay. Apart from these new additions, an incentive of thrice-daily flights between Miami and Sao Paulo will be added to their portfolio of routes.

American Airlines is reportedly reevaluating its schedule due to delays with Boeing’s 737 Max, however, further details are yet to be announced. Requests for comments from Boeing were not immediately responded to.
