Amazon has introduced a proprietary internal chatbot named Cedric, aimed at boosting employee productivity while prioritizing data security. The tech giant is positioning Cedric as the go-to AI tool for its workforce, advising employees to avoid using external chatbots.
Recent reports reveal that Cedric will provide employees with the ability to ask questions, generate document summaries, and access various resources—all without resorting to third-party tools like ChatGPT. According to an internal document, Amazon considers Cedric to be “safer than ChatGPT,” as it is designed specifically to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive company information.
This move aligns with Amazon’s longstanding stance on data protection. Back in January 2023, an internal memo from Amazon’s legal department advised employees against sharing proprietary data with external AI tools after instances where ChatGPT-generated outputs closely resembled internal information. This incident prompted Amazon to explore custom AI solutions, joining other industry leaders like Accenture and Edelman, who have taken similar steps.
In addition to Cedric, Amazon is looking to integrate AI technologies more broadly across its operations. According to Amazon Web Services (AWS) CEO Matt Garman, the company envisions a future where AI could automate most software development tasks, enabling developers to focus on innovation and customer-centric projects.
