Why Paying for ChatGPT Might Be Unnecessary Now

Gpt4

Last week’s major tech news revolved around GPT-4o, the latest model from OpenAI. This new version is more than just an upgrade to ChatGPT; it introduces an advanced Voice Mode that transforms ChatGPT into a smart assistant reminiscent of Samantha from the 2013 movie “Her” (though without Scarlett Johansson’s voice). While Voice Mode captured most of the attention, another significant update is that GPT-4o, along with its innovative features, is now available for free to all users.

A New Era of Accessibility

This is a notable shift for OpenAI. Historically, free access to ChatGPT was limited, with the subscription-based ChatGPT Plus offering enhanced models and exclusive features like ChatGPT Plugins and GPTs. Now, OpenAI is democratizing access by making many of these advanced features available to free users, effectively reducing the need for the $20 monthly subscription to ChatGPT Plus.

What Free ChatGPT Accounts Now Offer

Whether you’re creating a new ChatGPT account or using an existing one, you now have access to the GPT-4o model. You might need to manually select it (on mobile or desktop, choose the model name at the top of the screen and ensure GPT-4o is selected). This model is superior to previous versions in understanding uploaded images and providing insightful responses. It also excels in processing non-English texts, offering improved performance across multiple languages.

Expanded Features and Improved Performance

Previously, free users didn’t have access to models like GPT-4 and GPT-4 Turbo. With GPT-4o, this changes, as it brings data analysis, file uploads, vision capabilities, and web browsing to the free tier. These features, which were exclusive to paid users, are now available to everyone. Additionally, free users now have access to GPTs and the GPT Store, allowing them to use and create specialized bots for various tasks, from translation to meal prepping. Memory, once a paid feature, is now free, enabling ChatGPT to remember past conversations.

Evaluating the Need for a Subscription

The main limitation for free users is the message limit. Paid users receive five times the message limit of free users, although OpenAI hasn’t specified exact numbers. According to user reports, free users might be limited to 10 to 16 messages every three hours. Once this limit is reached, they must revert to the older GPT-3.5 model until the limit resets.

While paid users also face limits (80 messages every three hours on GPT-4o and 40 on GPT-4), they have significantly more access than free users. This extended access will likely apply to the new Voice Mode as well, making it more appealing to those who need extensive use of ChatGPT’s advanced features.

The Free Tier

OpenAI’s new approach essentially turns the free tier into a “ChatGPT Plus demo,” allowing users to experience premium features without a subscription. For occasional users, this might suffice. They can utilize web searches, image uploads, and data analysis sporadically without any cost. However, frequent users who hit the message limits might still consider subscribing to ChatGPT Plus.

For many users, the free version of ChatGPT is now robust enough to handle most tasks. GPT-3.5 remains useful for simpler queries, while GPT-4o can manage more complex or multimodal requests. For those needing even faster responses occasionally, Copilot remains an option. Thus, paying for ChatGPT may no longer be necessary for the majority of users.
