Nonprofit organizations raise millions of dollars without selling a thing the way they do this is complex and full of moving parts. Many wonder how an organization that is not selling a product or service can still profit solely from donations and charity. Often not explained, nonprofit are able to grow without a direct exchange of compensation. I had the same curiosity and questions as many of you may have about exactly how they do it. Today, you will learn how a successful nonprofit organization can make millions. We will take an in-depth look at the gears that turn and work to grow a nonprofit and how you could become a part of that success.

One given fact is that NPOs (nonprofit organizations) aren’t trying to sell you anything. Right? Well, sort of. Nonprofits do not sell products or services for compensation, however, it can be seen as selling a cause or change within the community. The tricky part is gaining trust, credibility, and excitement. These concepts are what make a nonprofit organization grow and sucseed financially. The roles and jobs within a nonprofit focus on building those three things. Let’s explore the jobs within a NPO:

Executive Titles

The top dogs of any successful nonprofit lie within executive roles. They are in charge of overseeing and managing all the aspects. Not only that, they are essential to the success and growth of an NPO as well. Executive titles must be strong leaders with the innovation, dedication, and representation of the nonprofit as a whole not only for the public but also for the other positions and volunteers within the nonprofit.

Board Member

Board members are the internal team that ensures the NPO is consistently focused on its mission. Hence the importance of a well-written mission statement see this article for more information. The board members play an essential role in maintaining a nonprofit’s credibility. It is important for appearance and tax reasons as well that a nonprofit always sticks to its mission statement and vision.Nonprofits are exempt from paying federal income taxes after being approved by Section 501c3 of the US Internal Revenue Code. This is only honored if the NPO is true to their mission statement and charitible to a cause. If a nonprofit stray from its mission it would be considered a 501c3 violation.

CEO

The CEO is the overseeing eye at the center of the nonprofit. The CEO oversees daily operations, budgeting, future developments, and events, and acts as the spokesperson of the NPO. As both the face and overseer of the organization, the CEO must embody the cause. This would mainly fall into maintaining an organization’s image and trust. If a CEO has good ethos, they are likable and trustworthy in the community’s eyes. This makes things run smoothly and upwards for a nonprofit.

There is also a COO (Chief Operating Officer) and CFO (Chief Financial Officer) both are in charge of overseeing their respective departments stated in their title.

Administrative Roles

On the administrative side, there are plenty of jobs as well such as an Administrative Assistant, Office Manager, Program Coordinator, Project Manager, Volunteer Manager, etc. All of these roles help a nonprofit move smoothly. They aid in the day-to-day tasks of running a nonprofit. Each position is in charge of an aspect that makes the nonprofit work.

Communications Team

It is also important to look at the communications department as well. This includes roles such as the Director of Communications, Marketing Director, Community Outreach Manager, and other more niche subcategories of spreading the word about events, and programs, and creating the image of the nonprofit. Image is essential when it comes to gaining all three aspects that make a successful nonprofit. It shows credibility, gains traction and trust from the public, and generates excitement and buzz around the nonprofit.

The communications team of a nonprofit organization differs from the communications team for an FPO (For-Profit Organization) because they must market and inform the public about all the organization is and has to offer. The communications team has a lot of interesting and fast-growing positions that include many skill sets. For example, one department that has grown rapidly is Social Media Marketing. That is now a huge part of outreach and image.

Donors

Donors are essential to the funding and purpose of an organization. While they are not employees, their role is still very important. Their trust and dedication are built brick by brick by the team of a nonprofit working together for their cause. The more donors an organization has the more donations, grants, and outreach or growth is possible.

How to Get Involved

There are many ways to get yourself into the world of nonprofits. A simple Google search can give you a list of all the nonprofit organizations around you. Shift through and see which one resonates the most with you and your own beliefs. Remember, a nonprofit is as strong and successful as the team behind it working together to represent and fight for the mission. Volunteering is the first step that can grow into so many opportunities you wouldn’t even think of exploring prior. Find your niche within a cause you truly believe in and become a part of something bigger.
