Ever wonder what it would be like to post your own video online and go viral for it? Many people have taken that chance and hit a home run. These people, influencers, have unlocked a new and efficient way to make a living from their own phones. Influencers are becoming more prominent in the workforce with every passing day. From a 15-second video to their very own product brand, influencers keep up with the developing business world. A new era of self-determined and flexible work has taken over the 9 to 5 past. Instead of being stuck behind a desk all day, this way of business allows for many unique doors to be opened.

What does it mean to be an influencer?

With the world’s shift towards technology, primarily the large use of social media, new job prospects have been born from the attention. Ranging from platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook, videos of people appear all over the main feed. The videos could be daily vlogs, food reviews, a fashion rant, or any other matter that sparks a need to film. Although posting videos is not the only element that goes into this job position. The amount of followers, brand deals, and overall key message make an influencer. A lot of companies use the influencers’ audience and followers as a platform to promote their products or brands.

What is the influencer market?

The business that comes out of the impact influencers create has given way to a new kind of market. The success and popularity of this specific profession have become known as the influencer market. To keep up with the developing and changing times, companies have evolved by hiring influencers to work for them temporarily. Wearing a certain kind of makeup brand, using specific headphones, or raving about a restaurant’s food are ways to subtly promote certain companies. If you see your favorite influencer talking about her new favorite gym pants or his favorite kind of shampoos, you would be inclined to go buy or even just remember that brand’s name even more. The influence these words of persuasion have on the public has encouraged the longevity of this new job’s lifespan.

In just five years, the value of the global influencer market has increased tremendously. In the year 2020, it averaged around 9.5 billion U.S. dollars and now averages around 32.5 billion.

Influencers vs. Traditional Jobs

Do you ever think about how nice it would be to do nothing all day but post videos and make thousands of dollars at the click of a button? While the appeal of creative freedom and flexible time management draws many to the influencer flame, some risks go along with it. Many of the idealized influencers are the ones with millions of followers who then help turn their videos into their high revenue. Although it seems like an easy dream, the reality is a lot less linear. The success correlates with the number of brand deals, sponsors, and consistent viewers for one account.

Success rate

How effective can it be for someone to talk about a product for only 5 seconds out of their 1-minute video? Seeing a product or company raved about by your favorite influencer and backed up by thousands in the comments can be very persuasive. Companies have profited from every click to their website and views of their products. This domino effect can be seen throughout every store and in media ads. Trends are hitting heavily with the younger generations’ fashion and product desires. How subtle and genuine these product placements and usage are seem the more compelling. Keeping up with the trends and trying your best to stay relevant are the main steps to being successful in the new media world. Understanding what kind of audience you are catering to and what demands your videos could meet of theirs are ways to stay afloat in this battle for the spotlight.

What does this mean?

The younger generations are moving away from the 9 to 5 norm. Seeing the fantasized online world draws many towards the dream.
