Here are seven perspectives I’ve gained through my experiences and lessons learned. This list distills the wisdom from my life’s trials and errors, aiming to provide you with some thought-provoking insights. Growth requires learning from our mistakes and finding blessings in life’s challenges. Wisdom nourishes a healthy soul, turning negatives into positives and bad into good. Each struggle and obstacle enrich our understanding and fuels personal growth. These insights are born from my journey to become a better person and highlight the rewards found in overcoming adversity.
“Approaching circumstances and interactions with flexibility enables resilience akin to a tree bending without breaking. Flexibility is an aspect of patience and necessitates expanding our comfort zones.” – Justin Jenkins
Setting Expectations
Know your limits and your ability to deliver on promises, deadlines, and advice.
Misunderstandings with friends or loved ones often stem from a lack of clear communication. It is important to establish expected results based on one’s capabilities, time, and knowledge. People may offer help or advice without thoroughly considering their abilities. Sometimes, it is better to inform someone that you will not be able to assist them. Do not promise or overcommit impulsively. Learn to communicate limitations effectively. Even with good intentions, failing to follow through can lead to unresolved issues. Setting expectations upfront prevents misunderstandings and provides clarity.
Learning to Let Go
Don’t cling to the past and trust the process in life. Things are meant to be. Don’t challenge or resist it.
This aspect of wisdom requires significant practice and grace. Experiencing heartbreak and recovering from it often comes at a considerable cost. Understanding such feelings and emotions can be a challenge. It can be difficult to walk away from situations and decisions that hinder our individual growth. Humans naturally seek identity through their choices, which sometimes leads to confusion and self-doubt. We instinctively expect harmony and happiness from life, and when things do not work out as planned, we may feel disappointment, depression, or anxiety.
Navigating these emotions and inquiries is challenging; however, turning to faith can provide an understanding that everything happens for a reason. Accepting that certain outcomes were not meant to be helps in moving forward more easily. Maintaining a positive outlook is essential, as the future holds numerous promising connections and opportunities.
Adapting and Being Flexible
A strong branch of compromise requires the ability to be flexible. Learn to navigate outside your comfort zone.
Approaching circumstances and interactions with flexibility enables resilience akin to a tree bending without breaking. Flexibility is an aspect of patience and necessitates expanding our comfort zones. For instance, during my university years, I shared a small space with a friend and sought solutions to accommodate both of us efficiently. To reduce costs, we shared many resources. I repurposed the additional closet space into a functional office/studio, which maximized our living area and provided us with more privacy for work. By choosing flexibility, we maintained our sanity and preserved our friendship. Furthermore, flexibility integrates compromise, allowing individuals to extend themselves and address team or partnership needs to foster harmony.
Learn to say No
You don’t have to please everyone. Create strong boundaries that establish your limits and what you are realistically capable of.
Often, individuals may try to fill a void or their self-esteem by agreeing to favors, work, or tasks for everyone. Valuing one’s time and self entails having the ability and confidence to inform others that you cannot, do not have time now, or are unable to complete the request. As a designer, I encounter many client opportunities, and sometimes based on workload and skill set, I refer them to another designer who needs work. This benefits all parties involved and establishes boundaries and expectations. For those who tend to please others, saying no may be difficult due to fear of rejection or self-esteem issues. It is important to prioritize oneself, and trusted friends or colleagues will understand.
Empathize with Others
Be slow to form opinions of others. Take a moment to walk in their shoes and realize we all have a backstory.
This concept is familiar and widely recognised. Instead of being judgemental or forming quick opinions about individuals, it is important to remember that each person has their own story. We all experience similar challenges and hardships throughout life. If someone responds in an unexpected manner, appears unapproachable, or behaves discourteously, do not overreact; rather, refrain from letting emotions and judgements cloud your actions. It is possible that this individual is experiencing a difficult day. Demonstrate understanding and inquire if they require assistance or are feeling alright. The manner in which we approach such situations and our tone can significantly impact how the individual perceives the interaction, ensuring they do not feel violated or vulnerable. There have been numerous instances where I could have formed a negative opinion of someone, yet often, through conversation, mutual understanding was achieved, leading to friendships.
Become a Master Listener
To fully immerse yourself into a conversation and topic, remember to pause and listen carefully. The more we listen, the more effective our responses will become.
This has been an area of dedicated interest for me. The more we practice active listening and truly concentrate on what someone is conveying, the more meaningful our responses will be. If we appear distracted or indifferent, it becomes evident, and our replies tend to be brief and do not contribute significantly to the dialogue. Demonstrating genuine interest in conversations also reflects respect for others and their viewpoints or responses on various topics. These practices extend to professional environments and aid in establishing robust connections both within and outside the workplace. Additionally, they foster new friendships. People hold others in high regard when they take the time to listen attentively and show a sincere desire to understand their perspectives. Furthermore, listening contributes to the development of stronger imaginative skills.
Embrace a Hobby
Having a passionate hobby can be a welcome distraction to our daily routine. Seek out other interests that can help you find balance.
One of the factors that has maintained my equilibrium throughout my life is my persistent interest in chess. Additionally, I find enjoyment in reading, cooking, and engaging in private prayer sessions. Having one or more hobbies can enrich your life and provide numerous lifelong benefits for your mind and spirit. Certain hobbies offer a sense of comfort akin to comfort food for the soul. They nourish other passions you may hold, whether secretly or outwardly, by offering alternative outlets for your emotions that counterbalance routine habits. There is no necessity to limit yourself to a single outlet for your energy when multiple avenues are available. Each hobby will afford unique opportunities for learning and growth that enhance both your mind and spirit. Furthermore, they contribute positively to mental health and well-being. Rather than relying on medication to address depression or mood swings, hobbies offer natural remedies that alleviate such symptoms effectively. This approach is universally desirable.
Conclusions
In conclusion, I would like to emphasize that these seven power perspectives are derived from my personal experiences. Although there are numerous other insights I could share, these particular perspectives are consistently influential in my daily life. Remaining mindful of these has provided me with significant benefits. The primary objective of this list is to inspire you to conduct your own research and reflect on the lessons gained from your life experiences. Often, we become so preoccupied that we fail to recognize and appreciate what we have learned. It is essential to acknowledge these learnings to truly value them. By overcoming challenges and embracing those moments, we acquire the most valuable knowledge and wisdom. If success were guaranteed and obstacles were removed, our growth would be limited. The greatest development and awareness occur between success and failure, leading us to the answers we seek.
