Xchange Chicago, a nonprofit initiative dedicated to building a robust tech workforce, has officially opened a new 28000 square foot technology business hub in the Grand Crossing neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side. The ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house were attended by Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, local business leaders, and representatives from major companies including MRO, Northern Trust, Aon, and Peoples Gas. The event marked a significant milestone in the city’s ongoing efforts to foster innovation and economic growth within underserved communities.
Empowering Local Talent Through Apprenticeships
Founded by the Comer Science and Education Foundation, P33, IT services provider SDI Presence, and local community stakeholders, Xchange Chicago is addressing a critical gap in IT services and workforce development. The organization leverages a unique onshoring model, focusing on training South Side residents for high-demand careers in technology. Through apprenticeship programs, individuals receive hands-on training in fields such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. Upon completion, candidates transition into part-time or full-time roles with SDI Presence, gaining immediate access to career opportunities in the tech sector.
Driving Economic Growth and Neighborhood Revitalization
Mayor Brandon Johnson highlighted the impact of Xchange Chicago, noting that the initiative has already created career pathways and economic opportunities for more than 50 local residents within its first year. The new tech hub is designed to serve as a catalyst for broader neighborhood revitalization, supporting both workforce development and commercial growth. By redirecting IT outsourcing spend toward local talent, Xchange Chicago aims to retain millions of dollars in investment within the city, strengthening Chicago’s position as a national leader in technology and innovation.
