The next generation of financial customers may not be human.
Speaking at Money20/20, Dan Morehead, Founder and Managing Partner of Pantera Capital, offered a provocative vision of the future of finance: a world where AI agents transact autonomously, stablecoins challenge traditional bank deposits, and blockchain becomes the underlying infrastructure connecting money, markets, and machines.
Morehead, who launched one of the first institutional Bitcoin funds in 2013 when Bitcoin traded around $65, sees striking parallels between the early days of cryptocurrency and today’s emergence of autonomous AI commerce.
“An AI agent isn’t going to walk down the street … and get a bank account,” Morehead argued. Instead, autonomous systems can create blockchain wallets within seconds, enabling near-instant, borderless transactions around the clock.
His prediction extends beyond payments. Morehead challenged the fundamental structure of traditional banking, arguing that fully reserved stablecoins offer an alternative to leveraged bank deposits. He expects stablecoins to capture a dramatically larger share of the financial system over the next decade.
Despite growing institutional interest, Morehead believes blockchain remains remarkably early in its adoption cycle, pointing to the fact that most institutional investors still have no exposure to digital assets.
His broader investment thesis is shifting toward what he calls the intersection of “money, markets, and machines”, where AI, robotics, and blockchain converge.

The implication for financial institutions is profound: the next wave of competition may come not from another bank, but from autonomous machines that never needed one.
