The Time 100 Gala celebrated this year’s most influential members of culture. From politicians and activists to movie stars and athletes there were some inspired fashion choices. We chose our top 3 favorite male looks for the evening for your viewing pleasure.
John Krasinski
Krasinski made this year’s list largely for his work on the smash hit film, A Quiet Place. As his friend Chris Pratt points out “He moved us. And scared us. And then moved us, which scared us.” While A Quiet Place was not his directorial debut, it is a film that has redefined the way society looks at him. Unlike the average horror movie, A Quiet Place shows just how far parents are willing to go for their children in a way that rocks you to your core.
It’s true that A Quiet Place is no ordinary horror movie, so it makes sense that Krasinski wouldn’t be wearing an ordinary tux. The choice to go with a silvery suit jacket was bold, but it clearly works for him. Its sheen serves to highlight the contours of his shoulders in the evening’s dramatic lighting, while the actual color keeps up an air of sophistication.
RuPaul
It seems that John Krasinski wasn’t the only one that evening to favor a metallic suit jacket. But where Krasinski chose silver, RuPaul pulled off a gold, purple, and black combo as only he can. One of the rare uses of a pattern on the carpet that evening, this look stands out for all the right reasons. One can only hope this leads to more men wearing color in future events like these.
While RuPaul himself didn’t make the list this year, he was on 2017’s list for his work on RuPaul’s Drag Race. He has been credited with bringing LGBTQ+ issues to the popular consciousness. Given his apparent style it’s no surprise he’s welcome on just about any red carpet.
Adam Rippon
This young Olympian has become known for not only his beautiful skating (and well-earned bronze medal), but for his willingness to be a role model for LGBTQ+ youth. In Time, Cher said:
“Adam is a skater who happens to be gay, and that represents something wonderful to young people. . . Adam shows people that if you put blood, sweat and tears into what you’re doing, you can achieve something that’s special. You can be special. And I think that’s very brave.”
Rippon himself has been outspoken, heartfelt, and dedicated as a role model, one many are happy to look up to. In an article by the Detroit News, Rippon is quoted as saying:
“I like sticking up for people, and the Olympics are an incredible platform where you can really speak up and speak your mind and have a lot of people listen. When I was at the Olympics, I took full advantage of that opportunity.“
It’s clear that Rippon’s natural leadership extends to style as well. While at first glance his outfit seems to be simple black on black, a more considered view shows a floral embellishment trailing down from his shoulder. When combined with the subtle difference in the texture of his suit and shirt, it’s clear that Rippon’s look has some serious thought behind it. Sophisticated but fun, this look is certainly exemplary.
