The Inspired Home Show 2023, which was held March 4-7 at McCormick Place in Chicago, recorded significant year-over-year gains in exhibitors and retailer attendees. More than 1,600 exhibitors and nearly 30,000 home + housewares professionals from 125 countries participated in the Show.

“The 2023 Show was an incredible step forward in the post-pandemic recovery of face-to-face events for the home + housewares industry,” said Derek Miller, president, and CEO of the International Housewares Association (IHA). “The enthusiasm and positive feedback we have seen over the last four days remind us all how important it is to gather the industry together in-person every year. It was particularly rewarding to see the return of so many who were unable to participate last year.”

The housewares industry is one which was uniquely positioned to fare well, “experiencing record Sales”, throughout the global pandemic, which led many people to spend so much time at home, The industry is now in a position to “speak a little louder” “by understanding the consumer and drive in product, marketing and merchandising” said Peter Giannetti, Editor in Chief, Home Page News.

The five pillars or driving forces that were the focus of the IHA Market Watch Survey 2023 are: Time, Space, Experience, Wellness, and Social Responsibility. Wellness emerged as the top pillar or driving force for consumers this year. When asked which is the most important to them at home, 47% said Wellness. That was followed by Time (19%), Experience (14%), Space (11%), and Social Responsibility (9%).

IHS 2023 had it all from the most minuscule kitchen aids like artistic corkscrews, a pomegranate fruit extractor, and innovative sponges to the most high-tech kitchen + bathroom alliances, including refrigerators, Vacuum Cleaners, washers + dryers; and everything in between.

As a first-timer, this reporter was overwhelmed by a number of really captivating manufacturers’ exhibits, which displayed and demonstrated brands in all product categories that make all things available to make one’s home their castle, retreat, humble abode + functional live-work space. IHS 2023 also showcased everything needed for that sleep, store + clean-up crash pad for those on the constant go to get ready for the next trip out of the door, to near or far destinations. On display was an amazing array of familiar and new products designed to make our home lives more enjoyable, clean, aesthetically pleasing, efficient, healthy, nutritious, and tasty; as well as products that enable the same for our time traveling away from home.

IHS 2023 was most definitely an international show with many nations represented including most notably China, which in my estimation had approximately 300 companies exhibiting including most of the luggage exhibits. In addition to the China Pavilion in the rear hall of McCormick Place North Building, Chinese companies dominated the luggage showcase and other product-specific areas of IHS 2023. By the way, I scored a great deal on a roller backpack floor sample, from a little high-power Chinese Lady, who spoke and did business just like a character in a movie. She was both cute and frightfully bossy; my kinda woman.

Colombia represented Latin America well with its outstanding homewares, furnishings, and bedding. Rimax’s mission centers around providing consumers with products that are of great value and helping our plant’s environmental sustainability manufacturing. The Show featured multiple new and returning attractions, including:

  • Addition of the Travel Gear + Luggage category, created in partnership with the Travel Goods Association.
  • The pre-show New Exhibitor Preview and Trending Today, featured brands and products new to the Show and that support at-home entertaining.
  • The gia Global Innovation Awards, honors excellence in home + housewares retailing, product design and student achievement.
  • Four keynotes focused on the future of home + housewares trends in consumer and retail evolution, including one by Walmart’s head of home goods and general manager of the home marketplace.
  • Innovation Theater sessions featuring industry experts such as Joe Derochowski of Circana (formerly The NPD Group); Anita Desai, TikTok’s Head of Home and Living; and leaders from Newell Brands discussing their consumer occasions-based marketing strategy.
  • The return of the Housewares Cares Charity Gala, benefitting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the James Beard Foundation, Winning with Wyatt and the V Foundation.

One of my favorite small appliances is the growing category of carbonation infusing pumps and tech.  The industry leader SodaStream had a large interactive and engaging display, a far cry from the single space booth at the Green Expo, when they launched the Carbonation infuser nearly 20 years ago. I bought one then because I was and am really into carbonated water. However, going forward, I am leaning towards a new player, Drinkmate, https://idrinkproducts.com/, from a small multiple housewares manufacturer, based in Ann Arbor, MI.  Drinkmate is distinguishable from the competition because it has developed a technology that enables the infusing in most any free-flowing liquid beverage including juices, spirits + wines, coffee + teas, recarbonation of flat sodas + beers and more.

Interestingly, everybody’s favorite purveyor of innovative must-have gadgets, you did not know you must have, BulbHead the company behind, the in-store, big box brand As Seen On TV product platform showcased many of it,s top sellers. BulbHead products include Space Triangles, Hemp Vana, Pedegg Power, and Pocket Hose.
