When I embarked on my journey into the world of entrepreneurship, the thrill of establishing my first startup initially overshadowed all the pertinent questions that needed attention. The initial excitement felt akin to a surge of endorphins, invigorating the passions I have nurtured for years. My long-standing enthusiasm for art and design was enhanced by the possibility of acquiring my own clients and overseeing my own business.
However, it soon became evident that managing a design business entails extensive hours dedicated to invoicing, as well as numerous drafts and phases that may span several weeks. These intricate details frequently tested my patience. The constant demands from clients were reminiscent of the unpredictability of blowing out candles on a birthday cake—what uplifted my spirit also faced the challenge of external pressures.
From Virginia to New York: Building a Business from Scratch
In 2017, I moved to New York City after living in Virginia for fifteen years. With the intention of starting anew, I embarked on a journey into entrepreneurship. The first year involved planning and establishing the foundations at a local Starbucks. Due to limited space while staying with a friend, I explored New York City while developing my venture plans.
Networking at Starbucks was straightforward, as conversations with individuals who had similar aspirations provided valuable insights. Soon, I met potential clients face to face but achieved a low success rate in securing them. Factors such as the office setting, which included noises like crying children, spilled coffees, and loud music, might have contributed to this low turnover.
Despite the ongoing rejection, I persisted by maintaining belief in my work and abilities. This perseverance highlighted an important aspect of entrepreneurship: the necessity to move forward regardless of setbacks. Quitting was not an option; commitment was crucial for survival in the competitive field. Experiencing failure and struggle offered opportunities for growth and gaining experience. These challenges further shaped my passion and provided mental resilience to oversee obstacles.
The Mental Strength Required to Succeed
Being a business owner requires a well-balanced emotional and mental state. It involves remaining calm under pressure and focusing on the positive outcomes that emerge from challenges. This experience can be compared to the rigorous training undertaken by Navy Seals. Entrepreneurship involves continuous evaluation and the potential for progress or failure.
Leading a successful business often means overcoming setbacks and learning from mistakes. By analyzing failures, entrepreneurs can extract valuable lessons that contribute to future success and form the foundation of a legacy. When I fail to capture the essence of a brand for a client, instead of questioning what went wrong, I start over and listen carefully to the client.
Over the past seven years, active listening has significantly improved my work. The more attentively I listen, the clearer the discussions become, allowing for better design responses in subsequent phases. This approach has enabled me to consistently meet client expectations and achieve favorable outcomes. Overcoming struggles makes positive feedback, such as five-star reviews, more rewarding. Maintaining a stable mental state under pressure is crucial to sustaining passion for running a design studio.
Breaking the Rules and Staying True to Your Vision
Successful entrepreneurs often rely on resilience, vision, passion, confidence, flexibility, and rule-breaking, which form the core of their brand culture. When we talk about going against the norm, I am talking about being able to remain committed to your own visionary purpose and ideas without allowing others and society to interfere with your uniqueness.
Pioneers are often leaders who have their own path that shapes their brand culture. There will always be outside forces against us and our ability to see the future. Not everyone has that ability and could see this as a threat to the status quo. It makes them uncomfortable because it challenges their own individuality.
The unwavering commitment to their vision is what gives business owners a distinct energy that is all their own. It is a big responsibility and a monumental challenge. But an extremely rewarding one in the end if they endure and continue.
Turning Setbacks into Fuel for Success
When we reach the summit and reflect, the hardships and failures seem like blessings in disguise that make us wiser, patient, and more efficient leaders. The pain and struggles in the very moments of dealing with them seem pale in comparison to the lessons that were handed to us, daring us to grow and become more effective leaders.
What we endure and learn shapes our brand and our internal culture. No business can create a positive culture without learning from negative experiences. No matter where you set up your office, from Starbucks to a 50-story building, the common denominator is learning and moving forward.
Setbacks drive us forward with greater momentum. By resisting forces that seek our failure, we set enduring examples of leadership for future change. This is at the heart of passion in every corner of brand success.
