Amazon CEO Andy Jassy recently shared his insights on successful leadership principles in an internal company video, emphasizing the paramount importance of earning employee trust in unique ways.
Jassy addressed a common misconception about trust within organizations. “They sometimes confuse it with being nice to one another or having social cohesion or not challenging each other in meetings. That’s not what we mean,” Jassy explained. “What we mean is being honest, authentic, straightforward, listening intently but challenging respectfully if you disagree, and then delivering what you said you would.”
He further emphasized the need for transparent communication, adding, “If you say you’ve got something, deliver it. If you own something and it’s not going well, be self-critical, and fix it.”
Amazon’s Foundational Leadership Principles
Earning trust is integral to Amazon’s 16 leadership principles, initially introduced by founder Jeff Bezos in the mid-1990s. These principles are fundamental to Amazon’s operational and value systems. Other notable principles include:

Having been with Amazon for 27 years and assuming the role of CEO in 2020, Jassy acknowledged the ongoing challenge of embodying these principles daily. “I’m still working on it,” he admitted, noting the ever-evolving nature of business. “People change, competitive dynamics change, products change, technology changes. The Leadership Principles are something you have to constantly work at. When they’re applied well, they’re powerful.”
As of Monday afternoon, Amazon had experienced a 37.4% increase over a one-year period, reflecting the company’s robust performance.
